Victory Boyd Sues Travis Scott, SZA, And Future Over Alleged Song Theft
Victory Boyd, a Roc Nation-signed songwriter, is taking legal action against Travis Scott, SZA, and Future, claiming the trio used elements of her 2019 song Like the Way It Sounds without her consent. The lawsuit, filed on January 8, also names several entities, including Cactus Jack Records, Epic Records, Sony Music, and luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet, alongside multiple songwriters involved in the track.
The dispute centers around the song Telekinesis, a collaboration between Travis, SZA, and Future featured on Scott’s 2023 album Utopia. Victory alleges that the track borrows lyrics and melodies from her original work. She claims she shared Like the Way It Sounds with Kanye West, who recorded a version titled Ultrasounds with her. Although that version was never released, Victory believes it may have been shared with Travis.
In her complaint, Victory states that her music was left in a Wyoming studio where Travis worked on the song. “Upon information and belief, Scott, SZA, and Future intentionally and willfully copied Plaintiff’s Original Work, specifically Plaintiff’s Lyrics and Melody, when they created the Infringing Work in May of 2023,” the lawsuit alleges.
Victory was credited as a songwriter on Telekinesis, but she claims she was unaware her work would be “copied and commercially released” by Travis and his collaborators. She had intended to release her version of the song through Roc Nation, according to the filing.
Adding to the controversy, Victory accuses Audemars Piguet of using Telekinesis in an advertising campaign without her permission. She argues that all parties involved benefited financially from her work without her consent.
The lawsuit demands that the defendants recall and destroy all copies of Telekinesis derived from her original song. Victory is also seeking damages, a full accounting of profits from the song’s marketing and distribution, and additional compensation to be determined at trial.
At this time, representatives for the defendants have not commented on the allegations.
