Jessica Alves Cancels U.S. TV Appearances Amid Growing Concerns For LGBTQ+ Safety
Jessica Alves, the Brazilian TV personality and transgender advocate, has made a tough decision – she is canceling all her planned U.S. television appearances. The 41-year-old, who is also a British citizen, shared an announcement on her Instagram Stories, citing fears for her safety and concerns over the current political climate under Donald Trump’s presidency.
Jessica explained that she couldn’t, in good conscience, discuss LGBTQ+ issues on U.S. television while the atmosphere is one of “fear and uncertainty.” She highlighted recent policy shifts, including Trump’s executive order recognizing only two immutable genders — male and female. The new policy, she said, directly impacts her friends and colleagues in the U.S., as well as many marginalized communities.
“It is with a heavy heart that I have taken the decision to cancel my upcoming television appearances in the United States,” Jessica wrote, adding, “I have been closely following events since the inauguration of Donald Trump as President, and I am horrified by the steps that are being taken to marginalise minorities.”
Jessica also expressed concern about immigration and birthright policies, which she described as targeting people from Latin America. As someone who has always admired the U.S. as a “beacon of hope,” she is disheartened by what she sees as a rise in intolerance.
“I sincerely hope that eventually there will be a re-emergence of tolerance of others that I believe lies in deep in the culture of the United States,” Jessica concluded.
Trump’s inauguration speech and executive orders have sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community. During his address, the newly inaugurated president made it official U.S. policy to recognize only two sexes. Trump expanded on this stance by signing an executive order titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”
The order states: “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
This policy shift also sparked controversy among Trump’s supporters, including Caitlyn Jenner, one of the most prominent transgender figures in the world. Caitlyn, who expressed happiness over Trump’s inauguration on social media, faced severe backlash from the public.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), Caitlyn wrote: “Congratulations Mr. President. Thanks be to God!” Her post was met with criticism, with many using her deadname, Bruce, and questioning her support for a president whose policies undermine her community.
Despite the attacks, Caitlyn posted photos from the Starlight Inaugural Ball, where she stood alongside notable figures such as Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi and Trump lawyer Alina Habba. She limited comments on the post to avoid further abuse.
