Lizzo Reveals The Wild Girl Band She Almost Formed With SZA

Lizzo and SZA almost took over the rock world — with a name that would have made headlines. During a Valentine’s Day Twitch stream, Lizzo spilled the tea on a past music project with SZA and an unnamed third artist.
The two singers, who have been friends since 2014, used to hang out in the studio, making music while eating pasta and drinking. At one point, they even had plans to form a rock band with a not-so-family-friendly name: Pussy Lasers.
“Oh my gosh, she’s not gonna get mad if I say this,” Lizzo laughed. “We were going to start a rock band called Pussy Lasers with an incredible other artist who I don’t know if she even wants to be mentioned, so I’m not going to mention her.”
The music they created had a ‘90s grunge rock vibe, and one of the songs from that era — F2F — eventually ended up on SZA’s 2022 album SOS. Lizzo remembered the exact moment she realized how special the song was.
“I was like, ‘This s— is hard, though’, so I was in the studio and I was like, ‘Man, pull that Pussy Lasers s— up.’ And let me tell you something: I sat and watched this girl freestyle the whole f—ing song,” she recalled.
Although one of SZA’s original verses didn’t make the final cut, Lizzo said the track featured some unique harmonized vocals that sounded like whistles.
“…I thought about that song all the time,” Lizzo admitted, adding, “I was just like, ‘I hope, I hope she puts it on the album. And then one day out of the blue she just texted me the finished version and I was just like, ‘And this is why you’re the GOAT.’”
Lizzo couldn’t stop praising SZA’s songwriting talent. In her words: “She writes the craziest, most insane s— that you’re thinking and feeling, but she just finds a way to say it, and she sings it so beautifully out the gate, out of her mouth the first time.”
The next day, Lizzo teased new music on X, making fans wonder if another collaboration with SZA is on the way.
