Fans Say Demi Moore Was “Robbed” Of Oscars

Demi Moore’s Oscar loss has fans fuming. The legendary actress, who has been in Hollywood since the 1980s, was the frontrunner for Best Actress at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. But in a shocking twist, the honor went to 25-year-old Mikey Madison for her role in Anora.

The upset sent social media into a frenzy. Fans took to X to voice their frustration, with one writing, “Demi Moore should have won that award. Robbed. #Oscars2025.” Another added, “Demi Moore losing to Mikey Madison is basically the plot of The Substance.” 

Many referenced Demi’s role in the body horror film, where she plays an aging celebrity who takes a drug that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself. One fan summed it up: “Hollywood rewarding young actresses while ignoring a veteran like Demi is exactly why The Substance is so relevant.”

Demi, 62, had won nearly every major award leading up to the Oscars, including the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Award. Dressed in a dazzling silver gown, she arrived at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood as the clear favorite. But when Emma Stone took the stage to announce the winner, it was Mikey’s name that was called, leaving fans stunned.

For Demi, this was more than just another nomination. Despite decades in the business, this was her first-ever Oscar nod. While accepting the Golden Globe in January, she reflected on how she once believed she wasn’t “allowed” to be acknowledged for her work. 

“…I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do,” she admitted.

But then came The Substance. “…The universe told me: you’re not done,” she added.

Her performance in the film had been widely praised, making Sunday night’s outcome all the more surprising. The Substance was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It only took home one: Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Some fans even joked that Hulu, which was streaming the ceremony, briefly glitched at the exact moment Moore lost. “Hulu shut off because they couldn’t bear to see us watch Demi Moore lose,” one user tweeted. Others shared memes of imaginary acceptance speeches she never got to give.

In the weeks leading up to the Oscars, Demi had reflected on her career struggles. At the SFFILM Awards in December, she admitted that by 2022, she had considered walking away from acting altogether. “At the beginning of 2022, I had a moment where I was at an event and I felt I didn’t belong. I didn’t know why I was there. I wanted to be invisible and I couldn’t figure out how to get out,” she said.
