Nick Jonas Admits Stage Fright As He Shines On Broadway

Nick Jonas may have rocked out at stadiums worldwide, but stepping onto a Broadway stage? That’s a whole new game — and even Nick admits it makes his heart race.
The 32-year-old singer and actor opened up at the premiere of The Last Five Years on April 6, at the Hudson Theatre in New York. While he’s used to performing in front of screaming fans and family members, this time, he says, the pressure felt different.
“The thing for me is there are a lot of people who love this show, who have played these roles in different productions, their high school or college or whatever. And it’s those folks who have done it that I feel most intimidated to do it for,” Nick said.
But instead of backing down, Nick is all in. “But I think that’s the beauty of storytelling and being an artist and an actor, is that you get to take big risks and put yourself out there. And I love it,” he stated, adding, “As intimidating as it might feel sometimes, I think it’s a really gratifying experience to get out and really put yourself out there and take big swings and see what happens.”
Nick stars alongside Adrienne Warren, a Tony Award-winning powerhouse, in the beloved Jason Robert Brown musical. It tells the story of Jamie, a rising novelist, and Cathy, a struggling actress, with their relationship unfolding from opposite timelines. This is the show’s first time on a Broadway stage, making it extra special for the cast and fans alike.
Nick had high praise for his co-star, Adrienne, calling her performance of Summer in Ohio “incredible.”
“She brings so much humor to this number. I think she is getting to sort of flex her various muscles, musical theater and the soulfulness she brings to the vocals. It’s just a really incredible performance,” he shared.
As for his own favorite number? Definitely A Miracle Would Happen, he revealed, saying, “It’s a funny sort of very real situation I think a lot of people go through, but it’s a fun one.”
To prepare for the role, Nick made a daily habit of walking to the theater. That stroll turned out to be more than just a commute — it became a way for fans to say hi, snap a pic, or just cheer him on.
Speaking to PEOPLE, he stated, “It’s a really good confidence boost before you go and do a show. It’s nice to meet people on the street. Most people are kind.”
Of course, not everyone gets it right. “And when they’re not calling me Joe or Kevin, it’s great,” Nick joked, poking fun at his famous Jonas Brothers siblings.
With the show running through June 22, Nick has been enjoying a more settled lifestyle in New York with his wife, Priyanka Chopra, and their 3-year-old daughter, Malti Marie. The whole Jonas-Chopra family turned up for opening night, including Joe, Kevin, and youngest brother Frankie.
“We’re so used to being in 10 different cities in 10 different days. And so to be in one place and have this time together has been really nice,” Nick said, adding, “We’ve been exploring a bit and keeping [Malti] active and busy.”
The couple has been making the most of their time in the city — exploring the sights, keeping Malti entertained, and carving out moments for just the three of them. As Nick shared: “We’re both obviously busy parents, but we’ve been finding time to spend time as a family and connect amid our crazy schedules and it’s been lovely.”
