Mariah Carey Speaks Up After the Same-Day Deaths of Her Mother and Sister
Legendary singer Mariah Carey spoke up regarding her mother and sister’s recent passing.
The R&B diva shared a brief update on Instagram, telling fans, “It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much and I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil. Love you!”
Last August, the 55-year-old confirmed that her mom and sister died on the same day. The singer reportedly told PEOPLE, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added.
The causes of their death haven’t been revealed to the public. Her mother, Patricia, was 87 years old while her sister, Alison, was 63. Patricia married Alfred Roy Carey, an opera singer and vocal coach who trained at Juilliard. During their marriage, they had three children: Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. They divorced when the “Love Takes Time” hitmaker was only three years old.
It is publicly known that Mariah had a conflicted relationship with her mother and sister. She wrote about the abuse and hardships she faced in her 2020 biography The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white—it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” Mariah wrote four years ago.
According to Mariah’s narrative, Alison abused her as a child. She revealed in her memoir how her sister poured boiling tea on her hand and drugged her with Valium when she was 12 and Alision was 20 years old.
A year after the book was published, Alison sued Mariah for the “intentional infliction of immense emotional distress caused by defendant’s heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation of defendant’s already profoundly damaged older sister.”
Alison also claimed that their mother allowed her to be sexually abused as a child during Satanic meetings that occurred in the middle of the night.
Mariah remained estranged from Alison until her sister’s death but managed to spend a week with her mom before Patricia passed away.
