Puerto Rico Court Archives The Restraining Order Against Ricky Martin
Much to the relief of Latin pop icon Ricky Martin, the restraining order issued against him was archived by the Puerto Rico court on Thursday.
On July 2nd, Judge Raiza Cajigas issued a restraining order against Ricky Martin after a man (related to the actor) filed a domestic violence complaint against the singer. The petitioner claimed that Martin refused to accept his decision to end their 7-month romantic relationship, and then stalked him on at least three instances.
In accordance with domestic violence regulations, the man’s name was not revealed. Through the Spanish publication Marca, Ricky’s brother revealed that the accuser was their 21-year-old nephew.
The singer took to Twitter on July 3rd, saying: “The protection order entered against me is based on completely false allegations, so I will respond through the judicial process with the facts and dignity that categorize me.” He further said, “Because it is an ongoing legal matter, I cannot make detailed statements at this time. I am grateful for the countless messages of solidarity, and I receive them with all my heart.”
Because the case was of domestic violence and incest, under Puerto Rico laws, Martin could have been sentenced to 5 decades in prison if the allegations were found true.
His spokesperson told the media: “The allegations against Ricky Martin that led to a protection order are completely false and fabricated. We are very confident that when the true facts come out in this matter, our client Ricky Martin will be fully vindicated.” Martin’s attorney stated that the idea of Ricky Martin being involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew is not only untrue but disgusting.
The trial was held Thursday where both parties took part virtually. Ricky Martin’s team announced that the court did not extend the restraining order, which was valid till 21st July. They also mentioned that all the claims made by the petitioner were false and that the petitioner had no evidence to back his statement. A judicial spokesperson said the petitioner ceased his claims voluntarily; therefore, the case was archived and no further procedures were required.
According to Ricky’s attorney, Martin Singer, the nephew is struggling with deep mental challenges. And they hope that the man gets the help he so urgently needs.
After the restraining order was lifted, Ricky thanked everyone who supported him through a video statement on TMZ and E! “Thank you to all my friends. Thank you to all the fans who always believed in me, you have no idea of the strength that you gave me with every comment you wrote on social media. I wish you love and light.”
Ricky acknowledged how the case was painful and devastating, not just for him but also for his family and friends. “I wouldn’t wish this upon anybody,” he said. He hopes that the petitioner who was claiming this nonsense finds help and starts a new life filled with love. He also revealed his plans to heal through his music and return to performing.
Looks like the singer started his healing process as he made his first public appearance at the Hollywood Bowl where he performed with the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra.
