A Mother’s Heartache: Kelly Clarkson’s Children Ask If She Doesn’t Love Their Daddy Anymore
Kelly Clarkson certainly has her hands full and her emotions on her sleeve as she navigates life after her divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. And now left with their two children, 9-year-old River Rose and 7-year-old Remington Alexander, Kelly’s children have been asked difficult questions.
Kelly shared while guesting on the podcast Podcrushed last week that when anyone goes through separation, the way you define love comes up quite frequently, and even so with young children.
The 41-year-old Stronger hitmaker shared with the podcast’s hosts Sophie Ansari, Nava Kavelin, and Penn Badgley that the divorce from her 46-year-old husband had led her children to ask her the golden question, “So, you don’t love Daddy anymore?”
The question from the youngsters came as a surprise, and Kelly was keen on answering it truthfully and in a way that the two children would understand. She replied, “I love that Daddy gave me you two. We don’t like each other like we did. It’s just different now.”
Kelly admitted previously that in the wake of her divorce, she needed to take antidepressants to get through it and have the capacity to function without being overwhelmed with emotions.
The Since U Been Gone hitmaker filed for divorce in 2020 after being married to Brandon for seven years. After two years, the divorce was finalized after lengthy, combative court proceedings.
Being a mother is more challenging now, and Kelly revealed that one of the most complex parts of the process is when she sees the question in her children’s eyes, “Can your love for me change?”
The devoted mother, singer, and host explained that this was not the only tricky question she had to deal with from her two children. She revealed how hard it becomes when they start asking why they don’t have a grandfather from her side.
She heartbrokenly shared, “You told me love is different between a parent and a child than a husband and a wife. But it’s not because your dad left you.” Recall that Kelly was estranged from her dad before he passed away in 2019.
Her divorce was another struggle, and last month, when she guested on another podcast, Las Culturistas, she shared how she sought refuge from what was happening by taking antidepressants.
Kelly revealed that she looked at her therapist at one point and couldn’t stop crying. She had to cancel some of her commitments the previous day because she couldn’t get hold of her sobbing. The Breakaway songstress told her therapist how she couldn’t deal with and manage her life then.
But because she struggled with her divorce, Kelly could put her pride aside and move on from all the childhood issues that were following her like a shadow. Her divorce strengthened her friendship with 68-year-old Reba McEntire, the singer’s former stepmother-in-law.
One thing that helped the Chemistry singer cope was having Reba by her side and describing their relationship as thick as thieves and that they constantly text and communicate with one another to catch up or share what’s happening with their lives.
