After Being Skinny-Shamed Online, Vogue Williams Says People Are No Longer Kind
Irish model and media personality Vogue Williams was recently criticized online for being “too skinny.” This happened after she modeled M&S swimwear while on her Spanish holiday last August.
The 37-year-old posted pictures where she wore a black one-piece suit and a skimpy blue bikini. Referring to the negative comments she received, she told The Sun, “I would never in a million years say anything negative to anyone online because I don’t know them. People aren’t kind. We went through a stage where everyone wanted to be kind to each other, but now it’s not.”
One person posted, “Not a good look, skin and bone” while another said, “You are beautiful but too thin.”
Vogue added that it’s impossible to please everyone and that receiving nasty comments is inevitable. She also mentioned that whether thin or fat, people would always have something to say about her.
She admitted, “My weight doesn’t really fluctuate. I don’t really diet, but I train a lot.”
One person wrote, “I would never put negative comments about a person, but I did stop this ad quite quickly, and I’m sorry, but I felt it wasn’t directed at your everyday woman modeling a swimsuit and no harm Vogue.”
Another comment read, “Shocking advertising #promote body positivity.”
The UK-based department store Marks and Spencer supported the model by writing, “A kind reminder to our followers that we positively use our platform. We’re proud to represent and celebrate people of all shapes and sizes. We won’t tolerate unkind or negative comments, and anything unacceptable will be deleted. Let’s all continue to uplift one another. Love M&S x.”
Many followers supported the comment. Others rallied to Vogue’s side. One notable comment read, “She looks great. Women come in shapes and sizes, and all women are ‘real’ and ‘normal’ no matter their size.”
The recent backlash comes just weeks after Vogue issued an apology and explanation to the public about her husband who was hospitalized.
According to Vogue, Spencer overdosed on cold sore medication during their holiday. At the time, she was quoted as saying, “’Well I will tell you what, he overdosed on cold sore tablets. I am not joking, I am not joking, I’m not. He overdosed on cold sore tablets and his liver function, because he did it for a full week, taking ten of these things and he said, ‘oh they’re fine.”
While talking to Joanne McNally on their podcast, My Therapist Ghosted Me, Vogue admitted that there are times when she likes to embellish things. The way Vogue delivered the news about Spencer was blown out of proportion because it caused confusion and alarm to the point that information about his passing away circulated online.
Spencer had to inform his fans and followers that he was very much alive and was merely hospitalized for two days. Vogue also had to publicly recant her statement because she was not even sure if her husband’s hospitalization was caused by an overdose or just a bug that’s been going around.
