After Danny Masterson Backlash, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Are Afraid of Being Cancelled
Power couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis admitted that they are afraid of being canceled after supporting their That 70s Show co-star and friend Danny Masterson.
Recently, Danny was accused and convicted of two counts of rape. Responding to his family’s request, Ashton and Mila wrote character letters to the judge that spoke highly of Danny’s character. They also requested a lenient sentence. When the contents of the letter were published, the public criticized them for enabling the crime and adding to the distress of the victims.
The move didn’t go well with many of the couple’s fans even after they shared a video explaining their side of the story and asking for an apology to those they might have hurt.
The couple’s relationship was also questioned, with many asking how the 14-year-old Mila was partnered with the 19-year-old Ashton when they starred in the hit series. The two have been married since 2015 and have two daughters together.
During the fallout, it was revealed that Meg’s ongoing voiceover job in the cartoon sitcom Family Guy has been a saving grace for the family financially.
One source revealed that the couple feels like they are being canceled by society. Although the couple is hopeful that the people rallying against them will eventually move on and allow them to move forward, Ashton admitted that what happened and people’s general reaction won’t be going away anytime soon.
The same insider revealed that one of the consequences of their actions is less work in TV and film.
Ashton faces new scrutiny as old videos of him showing problematic behavior resurfaced. In the wake of Danny’s conviction and 30 years of jail time, some people connect his past behaviors to the possibility of him becoming a Danny.
In one of the videos, Ashton could be seen making a questionable remark about Hillary Duff who was 15 years old at the time. In the video, Ashton said, “She’s one of the girls that we’re all waiting for to turn 18. Along with the Olsen twins.”
A close friend of the couple who requested anonymity revealed, “The entire wave that has hit them with this controversy is not fun to deal with; they are looking to lay low and ride it out the best they can. They aren’t going to be making many appearances any time soon.”
Additionally, the backlash that the couple received has caused Ashton to step down from Thorne, an anti-child sex abuse organization that he co-founded because his behavior was seen as contradictory to its cause.
In the resignation letter that he sent to the organization’s board, he called his and Mila’s involvement in Danny’s case an error in judgment.
He further wrote, “Victims of sexual abuse have been historically silenced, and the character statement I submitted is yet another painful instance of questioning victims who are brave enough to share their experiences.”
Further into his letter, he said, “After my wife and I spent several days of listening, personal reflection, learning, and conversations with survivors and the employees and leadership at Thorn, I have determined the responsible thing for me to do is resign as Chairman of the Board, effectively immediately. I cannot allow my error in judgment to distract from our efforts and the children we serve.”
