Ashanti and Nelly are teaming up for a very special duet — parenthood! The Grammy Award-winning artists have announced they’re expecting their first baby together, and the excitement is palpable.
Ashanti spilled the beans in a heartfelt video shared on her Instagram on Wednesday, April 17. As the R&B songstress prepared for a performance, her mom Tina Douglas innocently inquired about her timeline. Ashanti’s response? “Uh, I’m gonna need about nine months.” Cue her mom’s priceless shocked expression!
The news of the singer’s pregnancy comes with an extra sprinkle of joy. In an exclusive interview with Essence, she revealed that she and Nelly, her 49-year-old beau, are not only expecting but also engaged! Talk about hitting all the right notes in life.
Rumors of a baby on the way started swirling when the couple cozied up at the 11th Black and White Ball at the Four Seasons Hotel in December. Amidst the festivities, a tender moment unfolded on stage: Ashanti placed her hands on her belly, and Nelly mirrored the gesture. Their eyes met, smiles spread, and laughter filled the air.
This isn’t the first time the couple has surprised fans. Nelly confirmed their reconciliation during an appearance on the Boss Moves with Rasheeda show last September. He candidly shared, “It wasn’t anything that we planned. We both were pretty much doing what we do.”
Sometimes, a little time apart brings newfound understanding, as Nelly revealed, “You could be like, ‘Well yo, let me exactly see maybe what they see,'” he said, adding, “We all can be defensive sometimes in our own relationships. We know we wrong but we going to stand on it, you know what I mean? But we all a victim to that.”
And it seems their relationship is stronger than ever. During a recent event, Ashanti shared with PEOPLE that they’re in a great space and having a lot of fun. With Nelly already being a proud dad to son Cornell III (Tre) and daughter Chanelle (Nana), and having helped raise niece Sydney and nephew Shawn, their growing family is set to be filled with love and laughter.
