Beyoncé Makes History For Most Grammy Wins Of All Time, Ties With Husband Jay Z For Most Grammy Nominations
Although Beyoncé was fashionably late to the 65th Grammy Awards on Sunday, the singer still managed to break Grammy’s all-time record.
The award that placed her with 32 Grammys was her fourth win — best dance/electronic album for Renaissance. Interestingly, this year also marks Beyoncé’s first time getting nominated in the dance/electronic category. Winning her 32nd Grammy, Beyonce also took over the most Grammy win record from the late classical music figure Georg Solti, who has held the highest Grammy wins (31) since 1997. It has also placed her as the first black woman to win in the dance/electronic music category.
Delivering an emotional speech after the 32nd Grammy win, the Lemonade hitmaker, 41, thanked her husband Jay Z, her children, and her late uncle Johnny, who she said was gay.
“Thank you so much. I’m trying not to be too emotional. And I’m trying to just receive this night. I want to thank God for protecting me. Thank you, God. I’d like to thank my uncle Johnny, who’s not here. But he’s here in spirit,” she said.
“I’d like to thank my parents, my father, my mother, for loving me and pushing me. I’d like to thank my beautiful husband, and three beautiful children, who are at home watching. I’d like to thank the queer community for your love. And for inventing this genre. God bless you. Thank you so much to the Grammys. Thank you,” she added.
Altogether, the mom of three took home four awards, two of which were given at the non-televised Premiere ceremony. While “stuck in traffic,” her third win was announced for the Best R&B song Cuff It by the EGOT winner, Viola Davis.
When cameras couldn’t locate the singer for her 31st Grammy, singer Terius “The Dream” Gesteele-Diamant and musician Nile Rodgers (who both worked with Beyoncé on the track) appeared on stage to accept the awards. That was followed by the three-time Grammy host Trevor Noah announcing, “Beyoncé is on her way.”
A few minutes later, the Brown Skin Girl crooner made a grand entrance, leading Trevor to jokingly announce, “The queen is officially in the building. Ladies and gentlemen, Beyoncé Knowles.”
Adding to his commentary on her entrance, he told the former Destiny’s Child singer, “I was shocked that traffic could stop you. I thought you traveled through space and time.”
Despite winning four Grammys out of nine nominations, fans believe the singer should have also won either Album of the Year or Record of the Year, awards that were taken home by Harry Styles and Lizzo, respectively.
In all, Beyoncé’s nine Grammy nominations deliver her in a tie with her husband, Jay Z — 88 each.
