Billie Eilish Talks Nerves, Music-Making And First Performance On The Late Late Show with James Corden
Billie Eilish made a guest appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday, where she spoke about her nerves during her TV debut on the show at the age of 15. The appearance came as part of Corden’s final week on the CBS talk show.
Billie appeared on the show wearing a baggy blue sweater over a striped long sleeve shirt, keeping true to her signature style. As always, she captivated the audience with her authenticity and genuine approach to her music and performances.
When James showed Billie a photo of herself from her debut appearance and asked her what she remembered from that day, the Ocean Eyes star, now 21, revealed that she was very nervous, and had been sick for many years leading up to the performance.
“I was very sick. I was sick for many years, I feel like. Everything I did I was sick. My voice was kind of messed up and I was really nervous. I just wanted to do a good job,” she stated.
Despite her nerves and health issues, the Happier Than Ever singer was determined to do a good job on the show. James Corden praised her, saying that she is the same person he met all those years ago, in her core and in her person.
While James says her personality hasn’t changed, Billie’s performance has seen positive improvement since she first started out and she has gathered an impressive number of solid performances. Recently, she surprised fans with an energetic appearance alongside Labrinth at Coachella. She also headlined Lollapalooza in South America. When asked about performing at festivals with such huge crowds, Billie said that it’s one of her favorite types of shows to do , proving that nerves do not get in her way anymore.
“I love playing festivals. It’s one of my favorite types of shows to do. It’s just a sea. You stand there and it’s just endless people,” she stated.
However, she admits they require more effort as she finds them harder than other types of performances.
“I like to go out on the thrust, which is the catwalk thing. And I’ll look back at the stage and I will see myself on the giant IMAX and it feels like I’m really at the show and I’m in the audience and watching me on stage,” she shared.
Billie also spoke about her music-making process, sharing that she and her brother Finneas make music in the studio in the basement of their house. “That’s where we made the last record and then we’ve been doing it again,” the singer shared.
She described the process as different every time, saying that she can never recreate anything that has been successful in the past. In her words: “It’s very different this time. It’s proven to be different every single time. It’s weird. Every time, I’m like I’ve got it I know exactly. How to do it this time, you know it worked last time, I’m going to do it again and I can never recreate anything.”
