Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Finalize Divorce, Judge Signs Off Settlement Agreement
After months of speculation and anticipation, the divorce between pop sensation Britney Spears and actor Sam Asghari has finally been settled. A judge at the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County put the seal on their separation, as revealed by court documents snagged by PEOPLE.
The whirlwind romance between Britney, 42, and Sam, 30, which culminated in a wedding on June 9, 2022, hit a rough patch leading to their separation on July 30, 2023, citing “irreconcilable differences that have led to the irremediable breakdown of the marriage, making it impossible for the parties to live together as husband and wife.”
Sam took the formal step of filing for divorce on Aug. 16, 2023, marking the beginning of a legal process that concluded recently.
Their journey to legal singlehood has been a waiting game, as California law mandates a minimum six-month interval before finalizing divorces. Hence, the ex-couple will officially regain their single status on Dec. 2, 2024.
The divorce settlement came hot on the heels of Sam and Britney amicably agreeing to terms, including upholding their prenuptial agreement. Dispelling rumors, a source close to Britney clarified that she’s not financially entangled with Sam post-divorce, debunking previous reports of her involvement in his lease or rent payments.
“The report that she is in financial distress is false and she is not on any lease for him,” the insider stated.
In the aftermath of their split, Sam reflected on their time together, expressing gratitude for the experience and emphasizing a respectful parting.
“It was a blessing to be able to share life with someone for a long time…I’ve always hated people leaving a certain relationship,” he shared with PEOPLE in March.
“I’ve always hated people leaving a certain relationship — and at some point they told each other they love each other and they sat at the same table and ate food [together] — so I never understood when people part ways [and] they talk badly about each other. That’s something I’m never going to do because I had nothing but an amazing experience and a great life, and that’s always going to be part of my life, a chapter of my life,” he added.
Meanwhile, Britney has been embroiled in legal battles, including a prolonged dispute with her father Jamie Spears over conservatorship-related fees. However, the dust seems to be settling on that front as well, with the duo reaching an undisclosed settlement recently.
