Can Simon Cowell Make a Spice Girls Reunion Happen?
Kids who grew up in the 90s will agree that although boy bands were a big part of their lives, the Spice Girls were an unforgettable ensemble of girl power. Talent scout Simon Cowell recently revealed that he wants to put together a Spice Girls reunion that features all of its 5 members.
The 63-year-old mogul described the all-girl British group as the “best band of all time,” adding that his co-judge in America’s Got Talent, Mel B, was a massive part of the girls’ success.
The iconic group was composed of Mel C (Sporty Spice), Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice), and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice). A powerhouse in the 90s, the all-girl group enjoyed impressive record sales, selling more than 100 million albums globally. Unfortunately, the group broke up in 2000 after rumors of infighting emerged.
After the taping of an America’s Got Talent episode, Simon briefly shared the possibility of a Spice Girls reunion and said that he is a fan of the group. The last time the five girls were complete and onstage was during the 2012 London Olympics.
Before that, the 2019 Spice Girls reunion disappointed many fans because only 4 girls performed: Sporty, Baby, Scary, and Ginger Spice. Noticeably missing was Victoria Beckham, otherwise known as Posh Spice.
However, Mel B teased fans that it will be different in their next project. Although she kept quiet about the details, many are hopeful that a complete Spice Girls reunion is in the works.
Mel B shared bits of her conversation with the Daily Telegraph last July: “We are doing something together as the Spice Girls, and it has always been me kind of championing everybody together.”
She further revealed, “But this time, it was actually Victoria that was saying, ‘Come on, let’s all do something’ So, we have got something in the works, which will be announced soon.” The English television personality also said it’s the perfect time for everyone to do a reunion concert.
While Simon hopes to make it all come true, it will be challenging for the music mogul, given that he previously had clashes with Victoria. In 2017, Simon took a direct dig against the wife of David when, during an X-Factor episode, he rejected one of the contestants by commenting that he sounded like Victoria.
In addition, Simon also commented during the pandemic that stars depend on taxpayer money to keep their businesses afloat. Victoria was one of the celebrities that Simon was referring to. Back then, the English record executive called on famous people to face the challenge and use their resources to help their staff amidst the global pandemic.
If Simon can get the complete Spice Girls together for a reunion, he can count on it to be a huge success. The group rose to fame thanks to some of their hit songs such as “Wannabe,” “Say You’ll Be There,” and “Mama”—songs that many 90s babies still remember to this day.
