Cardi B Stuns at the 2023 Met Gala, Reveals Anxiety and Pressure to Outdo Herself Each Year
The 2023 Met Gala on Monday night brought out some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment, and one person who always brings the drama is rapper Cardi B. The 30-year-old artist is known for her daring fashion choices, and this year, she outdid herself by wearing not one, not two, but three jaw-dropping outfits on the red carpet.
But despite her confident appearance, Cardi B revealed in a Vogue video getting ready for the event that she feels immense pressure to constantly top herself each year at the Met Gala. “Every single time that I got to the Met, it’s fun of course. But it’s like, I don’t know, like, after my first time going to the Met, I always get anxiety. And the anxieties just grow and grow and grow,” she said.
The pressure comes from the expectation that Cardi’s looks will be more amazing than the last, which she says is difficult because she’s practically “competing with herself.”
“Maybe because my looks are so spectacular that people just expect every year to be more amazing than the last, and it’s so hard because imagine competing with myself. That is sickening,” she stated.
Despite her anxiety, the Bodak Yellow singer did not disappoint in her fashion choices. For her first look, she wore a pink bejeweled dress with a matching oversized tulle headpiece. She then showed up on the carpet in a black-and-white ballgown with floral details, paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld and model Lily-Rose Depp’s 2017 Chanel haute couture Spring/Summer show. She completed the look with a gray wig, which she said Karl was “infamous for.”
Cardi’s third outfit of the night was a pink-and-black houndstooth bodycon dress adorned with gemstones down the bodice and around the hem. To wrap up the night, she opted for a simple newsprint dress with spaghetti straps as she was pictured at an afterparty at The Box with husband Offset.
Despite the stunning looks, the 30-year-old admitted in an interview with Vogue that she gets nervous before attending the invite-only event. “The anxiety,” she said. “You know sometimes I be like, ‘I’m not doing the Met Gala next year, I just can’t do it,’ like it’s bad for my health.”
The songstress’ nervousness comes from a fear of “bad pictures, people not liking my outfit, like it’s just everything, the pressure!” However, her incredible fashion sense and daring choices have cemented her status as one of the most exciting stars to watch on the Met Gala red carpet.
