Drew Barrymore Speaks About Embracing Divorce As A Path To Liberation
In a candid discussion on Wednesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the beloved talk show host opened up about her journey through divorce and the valuable lessons she’s learned along the way.
Drew, 49, has had her fair share of experiences with marriage and divorce. From her brief unions with Jeremy Thomas and Tom Green to her more recent marriage to Will Kopelman, which ended in divorce in 2016, the actress has navigated the complexities of love and separation with grace.
During the show, she reflected on her past struggles with shame surrounding divorce. However, she expressed a newfound sense of liberation, stating, “I had so much shame around divorce and, for some reason, something happened, and I said, ‘I’m no longer willing to feel this way.’ And it just lifted from me.”
According to Drew, divorce to her is a way to save “the precious commodity we have on this planet, which is only our time.”
“And when you’re truly in a situation that isn’t functioning the way that, optimally, it hopes and wishes to be, we accept that, and we improve our quality of life by moving forward. Divorce now, to me, I don’t have shame around it. I’m like totally liberated,” she shared.
In a December 2022 interview with PEOPLE, Drew addressed her divorce from Will, emphasizing that there was no scandal involved. Despite the pain of separation, Barrymore remains committed to being a present and loving mother to her daughters.
“I know what that feels like. If I haven’t learned from that, then what was it all for ‘This is a family, so nobody’s going anywhere.’ I was determined to make it work because we all loved each other so much,” she said, highlighting her determination to nurture her relationships despite the challenges they may face.
