Dua Lipa Reveals How Friendship With Katy Perry Is Full-Circle Moment
Dua Lipa recently shared her heartwarming journey of befriending pop icon Katy Perry. In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, Dua, 28, revealed her elation at forging a bond with Katy, 38, whom she admired since her teenage years.
Reflecting on a pivotal moment, Dua reminisced about attending Katy’s concert at the Hammersmith Apollo in London when she was just 15. Little did she know that fate had a surprise in store for her as Katy invited her onstage during her California Dreams Tour to dance to Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
“That was a full-circle moment for me when she came to see my show at the Palladium because when I was 15 years old, I went to go see her at the Hammersmith Apollo in London,” Dua revealed.
“It was her California Dreams Tour, and she was bringing fans onstage and I jumped onstage and I danced. There’s this embarrassing picture of me online, but I love her,” she added.
Fast forward to 2018, Katy returned the favor by attending Dua’s show at the Hollywood Palladium. The Levitating singer described this encounter as a “full-circle moment,” cherishing the journey from a fan in the audience to a friend on stage.
The bond between Dua and Katy transcends admiration, as Dua received the Dark Horse hitmaker’s endorsement, solidifying her status as a rising star in the industry. Perry herself had expressed her admiration for Lipa, predicting her meteoric rise during her American Idol stint.
As Dua shared, “It was the first season of me doing American Idol. I was like, ‘I really need to get out of here by seven because I’m going to see this new artist Dua Lipa play at the Palladium.’ And my co-judge Luke Bryan was like, ‘Who’s that?’ I was like, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll know her name.'”
In a heart-to-heart with ELLE in 2019, Dua disclosed Katy’s invaluable advice to avoid the pitfalls of fame and tabloid scrutiny. Katy’s words resonated deeply with Dua, shaping her approach to navigating the industry with resilience and positivity.
“When I met Katy Perry, she was like, ‘I hope you don’t search your name.’ She was like, ‘That’s what I did at the beginning of my career, and I’d get upset about every tabloid that said something about me.’ She said, ‘Do not have notifications on. Do not read that s—, because it will stop you from doing what you love,'” Dua shared.
Amidst their friendship revelations, Dua dropped a bombshell announcement: her highly anticipated third studio album, Radical Optimism, slated for release on May 3. She shared her inspiration behind the album, drawing from the concept of facing chaos with grace and embracing radical optimism.
“A couple years ago, a friend introduced me to the term Radical Optimism. It’s a concept that resonated with me, and I became more curious as I started to play with it and weave it into my life. It struck me – the idea of going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm,” she stated.
Teasing fans with a glimpse into the album’s eclectic mix of genres, the singer expressed her exploration of psychedelia, trip hop, and Britpop, promising a musical journey infused with honesty and attitude.
