Dwyane Wade Shares Heartwarming Reaction From Family On Oscar Nomination
Dwyane Wade, former NBA star, recently shared his family’s heartwarming reaction to his Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Short. Dwayne, 42, discussed the moment he broke the news to his loved ones during a candid interview with PEOPLE.
Despite the prestigious honor, the proud father revealed that his family initially greeted the news with minimal enthusiasm. However, it was his daughter Zaya who truly grasped the significance of the nomination during a later conversation.
Recalling the moment, he shared a touching exchange with Zaya, where she expressed genuine excitement upon learning about the nomination. He described the pride he felt in sharing this milestone with his daughter, highlighting the impact of their work in telling meaningful stories through film.
“I was having dinner with Zaya, my 16-year-old daughter, and I was like, ‘Oh, let me share. Let’s have a little cheers moment. Share some news that your dad is nominated for an Oscar with his production company.’ And she was like, ‘Really? For what?'” he shared.
“And I shared with her that it was Barber of Little Rock, and she said, ‘Wait a minute. My friends have been talking about it. They’ve watched it, they’ve seen it,'” he added. “So that was a cool moment to be able to let my daughter know that I’m on that side of the world, and we’re telling some, and highlighting some really cool stories that are meaningful and impactful.”
Dwayne, who shares a close bond with his children from various relationships, emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for Zaya, especially in light of her transgender identity. He expressed his commitment to being a source of unconditional love and support for her, ensuring she feels safe and confident in confiding in him.
“I don’t want to just be one of those people who’s just been given to Zaya and she doesn’t feel open and confident in me. I want to show her what unconditional love looks like so she can use me as this sounding board through life,” he stated.
Reflecting on Zaya’s journey and the broader transgender community, he underscored the importance of acceptance and understanding, adding, “I feel like it’s shown in Zaya. It’s shown in Zaya through the world because of her being a part of the trans community.”
