Eminem’s Half-Brother Nate Slams Late Mom on Social Media
The death of Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother, has reignited family drama in the Mathers household. Debbie, who passed away earlier this week at 69 after battling advanced lung cancer, left behind strained relationships with her famous son, Eminem, and his younger half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Kane Mathers.
While Eminem has remained silent about his mother’s passing, Nate took to social media to share his emotions just one day after her death. His post didn’t name Debbie explicitly, but the sentiment was clear. “Hatred and mixed emotions today,” he wrote, hinting at the deeply fractured bond they shared.
A History of Estrangement
The Mathers family dynamics have been tumultuous for decades. Nate, now 38, was placed in foster care when he was just eight years old. At 16, Nate was adopted by his older brother, Eminem, who had already risen to fame.
Debbie had Nate with Fred Samara Jr. after having Eminem with Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. She was known for her rocky relationships with her sons. These challenges were famously documented in Eminem’s music, most notably in his 2002 hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” which exposed his bitterness toward her.
In a 2008 interview with The Village Voice, Debbie spoke about her fractured relationship with her sons. “I’m not ever gonna give up on my kids. I won’t give up on anybody,” she said. “It’s a matter of just basically swallowing your pride… You need to move on.”
Eminem’s Evolving Perspective
Although their relationship was far from perfect, Eminem hinted at a desire for reconciliation in his 2013 song “Headlights.” The rapper reflected on the pain his words may have caused his mother, rapping, “I went in headfirst, never thinking about who what I said hurt / My mom probably got it the worst.” He even expressed gratitude, adding, “Mad I didn’t get the chance to thank you for being my mom and my dad.”
However, sources suggest the rapper and his mother had little communication in recent years. InTouch Weekly reported in September that Eminem continued to support Debbie financially despite their estrangement. “He’s good to his mom. He makes sure he takes care of her, but they don’t really talk,” an insider shared.
Nate’s Role in the Family Drama
While Eminem’s feelings toward Debbie may have softened over time, Nate’s recent post suggests his anger remains unresolved. Whether or not he reconciled with his mother before her death is unknown, but their history of tension is undeniable.
Eminem has yet to publicly address his mother’s passing, leaving fans wondering how her death will influence him moving forward. Debbie’s final months were reportedly spent in a cancer center and with family, with little contact from her eldest son.
