Emma Watson Reveals Why She Took A Break From Hollywood And Shares Her Plans for the Future
Emma Watson has been out of the spotlight for a while now and hasn’t acted in about five years. Recently, in an interview with The Financial Times, the beloved actress known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, opened up about her decision to take a break from Hollywood and her plans for the future.
Emma, who turned 33 in April, shared that she “wasn’t very happy” with her film career around the time her last film, 2019’s Little Women, was released in theaters. She explained that she felt “caged” and frustrated with having to sell something she didn’t have much control over.
The Beauty and the Beast actress revealed that she was “held accountable in a way that I began to find really frustrating, because I didn’t have a voice, I didn’t have a say.”
“To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process,” she stated.
She further explained that she felt the urge to only be a part of things she could defend without hating herself.
In her pursuit of creative freedom and control, Emma made her directorial debut in 2022 with a short film created for an advertising campaign for Prada. She revealed that she has been asked to direct an upcoming music video for an artist, though she did not specify who the artist was.
The actress plans to return to the movies soon, as The Financial Times reported that she would be appearing in a yet-to-be-announced film whose production will begin early in 2024. However, she wants to do it in a way where she doesn’t have to “fracture myself into different faces and people.” Emma is also planning to study for a master’s degree in creative writing at Oxford University in September.
“I love what I do. It’s finding a way to do it where I don’t have to fracture myself into different faces and people,” she said, adding, “And I just don’t want to switch into robot mode any more. Does that make sense?”
While there is no telling the next time she will be on the big screen, Emma’s fans are excited about her future projects and can’t wait to see what she will do next.
