“Everything Is About Her”: Courtney B. Vance Says Of Wife Angela Bassett
In a heartwarming revelation, actor Courtney B. Vance is opening up about his enduring love story with actress Angela Bassett. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine, Courtney, a celebrated Emmy-winner, shared the remarkable journey of their 26-year-strong marriage, offering a glimpse into the transformative power of love, faith, and commitment.
Their love story began on the memorable premiere night of the 1996 film The Preacher’s Wife, directed by Penny Marshall, where Courtney starred alongside icons Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington. He recalled, “That was a transitional moment in my life.”
It was on that fateful evening that he proposed to Angela, just months before they exchanged vows on October 12, 1997. Courtney fondly reminisces, “She, Whitney, The Preacher’s Wife, Penny Marshall — the whole [experience] was a turning point in my life.”
Courtney also shed light on his recently co-authored book with Dr. Robin L. Smith, titled “The Invisible Ache: Black Men Identifying Their Pain and Reclaiming Their Power.” He emphasized the pivotal role that Angela plays in his life, describing how everything revolves around her. The couple has not only shared a strong personal bond but also founded a film production company, Bassett Vance Productions, while nurturing their roles as parents to twins Bronwyn Golden and Slater Josiah, now 17.
In The Invisible Ache, Courtney delves into his mental health journey, touching on his partnership with Angela, years of therapy, and his unwavering Christian faith. He candidly admits that his journey began with the tragic suicide of his father in 1990 and encountered significant challenges during the early stages of his marriage.
Courtney recalled, “We had done nine weeks of premarital counseling. I thought I was ready for my soulmate.” However, the reality of marriage proved to be a profound experience. He shared, “Marriage is a whole other thing that you have to commit to. ‘Where two become one’ is a mystery.”
Shortly after tying the knot, the actor faced a severe anxiety attack or mental breakdown. It was a moment of vulnerability as Angela reportedly consulted with doctors while he lay in a hospital bed, tears streaming down his face. It was during this low point that Courtney turned to his Christian faith, reading the Bible five times in a row, seeking solace and guidance.
With unwavering determination, Courtney shifted his perspective, recognizing that “everything is about her.” He embraced change, taking decisive steps towards personal growth, and became a devoted partner in their household chores. Now speaking about it, he emphasized, “I recognized, thank God, early on — after that epiphany — that everything is about her.”
