Gabrielle Union Reveals How Her Marriage Inspired Her New Film “The Idea of You”
Gabrielle Union spilled the beans about her latest flick The Idea of You and its connection to her marriage with Dwyane Wade, 42. The movie, based on Robinne Lee’s novel, delves into the whirlwind romance of a divorced mom and a younger pop star.
During a recent advanced screening, Gabrielle shared her excitement about the project, which is set to premiere on May 2 and couldn’t help but draw parallels between the film and her own life.
Asked if she sees a rom-com resurgence coming, she responded, “Oh please. I hope so.”
“Being inspired by Robinne’s book and knowing that [main character] Solene’s story was a very specific story. I was like ‘I want in.’ I live this! I’ve got a younger man with a big life,” she added.
One scene in the movie particularly struck a chord with the 51-year-old actress when the character goes on vacation with a younger crowd, reminiscent of her own experiences with Dwayne’s friends.
“I love it because it reminds me of when I vacation with some of my husband’s friends. It’s like, ‘Oh so no one’s heard of Jefferson Airplane?'” she stated.
Anne Hathaway, who stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine, chimed in about the film’s dual nature as both a rom-com and a work of art. “Those two things are not mutually exclusive. The amount of care and craft that was put into this movie was as high-level as any film I’ve ever worked on,” she praised.
But it’s not just about the movie; it’s about the ripple effect it creates in the artistic community. Anne believes that great art inspires more art, fostering a diverse range of stories.
In her words, “I do think that art begets art, so I’m excited to see art that happens because audiences and artists and the artists in the audiences have seen this film and connected and it makes them want to tell their own kind of story. And they’ll expand the range.”
Despite the age difference between Gabrielle and Dwayne, their family time remains precious. Recently, they enjoyed a delightful family trip to Santa Barbara with their 5-year-old daughter, Kaavia James. The NBA star even shared glimpses of their fun-filled adventure on Instagram, showcasing love and joy on what he referred to as the “overnight family trip to Santa Barbara for a little fun and a lot of love ❤️.”
