Get Ready for Ice Spice’s Big Screen Debut
After conquering the music world, Ice Spice has set her sights on Hollywood. The 24-year-old rapper has joined the cast of Spike Lee’s remake of the 1963 crime thriller High and Low.
Director Spike Lee’s High and Low is confirmed to be an English language interpretation of the original film, but it’s unclear whether it will also take inspiration from the plot. The original film by Akira Kurosawa is based on Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom. It tells the story of a businessman who navigates a hostage negotiation and investigation to rescue his chauffeur’s kidnapped son.
The novel and film explored themes of economic inequality and class dynamics, eventually winning a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film that year. Whether Lee will use the same elements and how he’ll interpret them for today’s audiences will be fun to watch.
Lee’s project is being developed and produced by A24, Mandalay Pictures, and Escape Artists. Meanwhile, the script is being written by Spike Lee and Alan Fox. Audiences can look forward to a theatrical release or wait for its streaming debut on Apple TV+.
Apart from Ice Spice, the project will also feature Denzel Washington in the lead role. This will be director Lee and Washington’s fifth collaboration. They’ve previously worked together on Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, Inside Man, and He Got Game. They even briefly reunited for a commemorative photo where they’re each holding up five fingers while standing side by side. The picture was posted to X with the caption, “No. 5 now in production.”
There hasn’t been news regarding which character Ice Spice will be taking on, but reports suggest she’ll be making a cameo appearance. Details of the film are being kept under wraps for now but the movie has already begun filming.
Ice Spice’s first entry into the limelight was in 2022 when she released her single “Munch (Feelin’ U).” In a short time, we’ve seen the rapper take on a wide range of projects while exploring different mediums.
She was nominated for 4 Grammys this year, including a nomination for Best New Artist. She’s also featured on the Barbie movie soundtrack for her song “Barbie World” with Nicki Minaj. In September 2023, the rapper starred in a Dunkin commercial opposite Ben Affleck. And lest we forget, she was also a featured artist on Taylor Swift’s “Karma” which has earned many positive reviews, including compliments from the Eras Tour musician herself.
While Ice Spice is sure to stay on the entertainment industry’s radar in the near future, fans will have to wait for her big-screen debut for another year.
However, her loyal followers can still catch the rapper at one of her many appearances in 2024. Some of these include her two Coachella weekend performances this month along with many other summer festival appearances. Fans waiting for more music from the rapper will also be in for a treat as her debut album Y2K is scheduled for a late 2024 release.
