“I Am Being Able To Speak The Truth On My Songs”: Former Little Mix Member Jesy Nelson Opens Up About Feeling Independent as a Solo Artist
Jesy Nelson, the former member of the popular girl group Little Mix, recently spoke candidly about her experience as a solo artist following her separation from her girls. In an appearance on This Morning, the singer, who left the band in December 2020, shared that she feels a “real sense of independence” after quitting the group and battling with her mental health.
“Being in front of the camera was a constant rollercoaster in the band. You don’t get the time to breathe and know how you should be feeling. We were so young. Now we are women. You learn a lot,” she stated.
The 31-year-old singer also revealed that she has not been in communication with her former bandmates Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock in over two years. The other three had gone on to maintain the group as a trio until they eventually went their separate ways last year.
Coming off the topic involving her ex-bandmates, Jesy spoke about her new album and latest single, Bad Thing which portrays domestic abuse in a “raw and honest” manner. Part of the freedom Jesy now feels has to do with how she can now touch on whatever she wants to without interference.
“I am being able to speak my truth on songs. I want to make music that makes a difference so this is really important for me,” she stated.
Jesy doubled down on her mission to create awareness for domestic violence in the music video for Bad Things. In the video, she played the role of a woman in a toxic relationship in the 1969s.
Speaking of the inspiration behind the video, she said, “It was really important for me to create this video because a lot of women in my life have experienced domestic violence. I wanted to raise awareness.”
Jesy ended the interview by saying that she is in a good place and has built lovely friendships with her fans. “They are the kindest, sweetest fan base,” she said, adding that she loves to “connect with them and hear the stories they are going through.”
The Boyz singer also hinted at touring soon, saying, “I can’t wait to tour. I feel like I haven’t toured in so long. I haven’t connected with them in so long.”
Overall, Jesy’s interview on This Morning highlighted her newfound independence as a solo artist, her passion for raising awareness about domestic abuse, and her love for her fans. It seems that the singer is in a good place and is excited about what the future holds for her music career.
