Janelle Monáe Shares How Prince Forever Shaped Her Music and Career

In an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the talented singer and actor Janelle Monáe, aged 38, shared her cherished memories of the legendary Prince, emphasizing the invaluable mentorship she received from the late rock icon.
Reflecting on their collaboration, Janelle fondly recalled her experience working with Prince, who not only lent his musical genius but also served as a guiding light in her career. The Grammy-nominated artist reminisced about a special moment when Prince surprised her by joining her on stage during her set at The Forum.
Reminiscing about the unexpected gesture, she said, “This was my set opening for him and he came out for my set and performed our song that we have together on The Electric Lady. You know, the headliner never comes out before it’s time for them to come. And for him to do that, I am just forever indebted.”
Janelle further highlighted Prince’s remarkable character, stating, “He never let his — how do I put it — his mystery get in the way of his mentorship.”
When Jennifer Hudson, the show’s host, tried to know more about their collaboration as he almost got the chance to work with Prince herself, Janelle shared Prince’s affection for Jennifer.
In her words: “He loved you. I remember us talking about you — like, he loved you.”
“That just speaks to the type of person that he was. I think that he was a big advocate for artists, for Black women in particular,” she added.
Janelle was one of the fortunate talents mentored by Prince, joining the ranks of artists like Sheila E., Alicia Keys, and Lizzo. Their collaboration began with the R&B hit Givin’ ‘Em What They Love, featured on Monáe’s 2013 album, The Electric Lady. Even after Prince’s passing in 2016, his influence endured. He sent Monáe a recording that she later released as the lead single on her 2018 album, Dirty Computer.
The songstress spoke to The Guardian about the challenges of losing a friend and collaborator but finding ongoing inspiration in Prince’s memory. She credited Prince for her personal and artistic growth, stating, “I wouldn’t be as comfortable with who I am if it had not been for Prince.” She dedicated much of her music to him, recognizing his contributions to music, Black culture, and individuality.
In a conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, she shared a valuable lesson she learned from Prince that still guides her today: “Cut it down in half.” Prince advised simplifying and slowing down, helping musicians find their rhythm and be present. According to Janelle, she has embraced this approach in her life and it serves as a reminder to stay grounded and focused.
