Jenna Bush Hager has plenty of funny family stories, but the day her first daughter was born might just be one of the best.
On the February 7 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends, Jenna, 43, shared a hilarious moment leading up to the birth of her daughter, Mila, 11. It all started at her baby shower when, in the middle of opening gifts, her water suddenly broke.
Her twin sister, Barbara Bush, immediately called Jenna’s husband, Henry Hager, to tell him she was going to the hospital. But Henry, knowing how much the sisters love to joke around, didn’t believe her. “Those sisters who play pranks on me! I’m not falling for it,” he reportedly said.
It wasn’t until one of Jenna’s Today producers, Carrie, and her husband stepped in that Henry realized it was real. “…Her husband said, ‘No, Henry, I know Barbara and Jenna would act like that to you, but Carrie would never lie to me, so you need to go to the hospital,’” Jenna recalled.
Jenna and Barbara have always had a close bond. The sisters grew up in the spotlight as the granddaughters of former President George H.W. Bush. Later, they became the daughters of George W. Bush when he was elected president in 2001. Since then, they’ve built successful careers — Jenna as a TV host and author, and Barbara as an activist.
But at the heart of it, they’re still just two sisters who love to tease each other. When Jenna celebrated her 43rd birthday in November 2024, she shared that she and Barbara planned to reunite so they could celebrate together.
Jenna and Henry, who married in 2008, now have three children – 11-year-old Mila, 9-year-old Poppy, and 5-year-old Hal. She often shares sweet family moments on her show, including a special bedtime tradition she has with her kids. Before bed, she whispers a mantra to each child, filling them with love and positivity.
“For Poppy, it was ‘You are loved, you are loved, you are loved, they all say.’ And, I thought I made it up and then I realized I got it from a book. But, I try to just infuse goodness right before bed,” Jenna revealed.
