Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner Reach Divorce Settlement After A Year Of Legal Battles
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have officially settled their divorce, a year after the singer first filed to end their four-year marriage. In court documents filed on Sept. 6 and obtained by PEOPLE on Sept. 10, a Florida judge declared their marriage “irretrievably broken,” finalizing their split.
While the details of their settlement remain confidential, court records show that both parties agreed it was “in the best interests of the parties and this family.” The judge allowed them to bypass the usual 20-day waiting period for a final judgment, restoring them to their single status.
Joe, 35, initially filed for divorce from Sophie, 28, on Sept. 5, 2023. The following day, the pair released a joint statement on social media, announcing the end of their marriage. “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” the couple wrote, adding, “There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision, and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
But things weren’t quite so simple. According to court documents filed on Sept. 21, 2023, Sophie claimed the breakdown of their relationship came suddenly, following an argument on Aug. 15, 2023. She alleged that she only found out about the divorce when it hit the media.
A key sticking point in their split was the custody of their two daughters, Willa, now 4, and Delphine, now 2. In late September 2023, the Game of Thrones star filed a complaint accusing Joe of withholding the children’s passports, preventing them from traveling to the UK, where she had intended to move.
Joe, however, disputed her claims, with his representative stating that he believed they had agreed to a co-parenting plan. Sophie eventually dropped the lawsuit in January 2024.
In October 2023, both sides reached a temporary agreement regarding the custody of their daughters, following a mediation process. Sophie wanted to move back to England, a plan she claimed they had discussed during Christmas of 2022, when they agreed that England would be their “forever home.” However, Joe reportedly had a change of heart after their split.
The custody battle reignited in early 2024, with Sophie’s attorneys requesting the court to “reactivate” the case. By May 2024, the actress opened up about the situation in British Vogue, saying that she wasn’t happy about how the situation played out, especially for the kids.
“They’re the victims in all of this,” she said, adding, “But I think we’re doing the best we can. I’m confident that we can figure it out. Joe is a great father to our children and that’s all that I can ask for.”
Despite their personal struggles, both Joe and Sophie remained focused on doing what’s best for their daughters.
