Johnny Depp And Hollywood Vampires Reschedule Shows Following Star’s Ankle Injury
The Hollywood Vampires, featuring actor-turned-musician Johnny Depp, have delayed the American tour dates due to Depp’s unexpected injury. Johnny, aged 59, injured his ankle while at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was promoting his film Jeanne Du Barry.
“Johnny has sustained a painful injury to his ankle following his recent appearances,” reported the band on their Instagram. The renowned actor of “Edward Scissorhands” further exacerbated his injury at a tribute show for the late Jeff Beck, his dear friend. Now, under doctor’s orders, Johnny has been advised against flying for an indefinite period. “He is devastated by this turn of events but looks forward to resting up so all four vampires can bring their absolute best to the tour in Europe,” the band stated, hinting at their commitment to upcoming performances. The rescheduled shows were originally set for New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York this June.
The Hollywood Vampires, formed in 2012, consists of Johnny, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry. Their roots lie in performing covers as a tribute to rock stars who passed away in the 70s.
Johnny and Jeff, the legendary guitarist who recently passed away from bacterial meningitis at 78, had a close musical connection, explaining why he went above and beyond to perform at the late singer’s tribute show.
They collaborated on a 13-track album that included two Johnny originals and an array of covers, drawing from a wide range of artists, including the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Killing Joke, and The Velvet Underground.
“When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity,” Jeff reminisced about their collaboration in a statement to Billboard.
The album cover sports an illustration of Johnny and Jeff as 18-year-olds, courtesy of Beck’s wife, Sandra, reflecting their nostalgia for their teen years. Johnny grew up a fan of Jeff’s music and cherished the opportunity to collaborate with him.
“I haven’t had another creative partner like him for ages,” Jeff admitted, adding, “I just hope people will take him seriously as a musician.”
Indeed, Johnny’s musical prowess is evident in his renditions of classics like Marvin Gaye’s Ooo Baby Baby, The Velvet Underground’s Venus In Furs, Caroline, and Killing Joke’s Death And Resurrection Show. Especially noteworthy is his original, This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr, which received high praise from Jeff. “That song is one of the reasons I asked him to make an album with me,” he revealed.
As Johnny recovers, his fans eagerly await the rescheduled tour dates.
