Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow’s Potential Return To The Caribbean Franchise
Pirates of the Caribbean fans are ecstatic about the possibility of Johnny Depp reprising his classic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney has not ruled out Johnny and his character appearing in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Recall that the 59-year-old actor was axed from the Disney franchise in 2018 on the premise that they hoped to incorporate new energy into the much-loved franchise.
But recently, in an interview with The New York Times, Sean Bailey, Disney Studios Motion Picture Production President, shared that while the discussion of the sixth installment is ongoing, they are exploring the option of Johnny’s return.
Although he was clear that the studio is non-committal right now, he explained, “We think we have a really good, exciting story that honors the films that have come before but also has something new to say.”
This possible reprisal of Captain Jack Sparrow’s character comes after Johnny won the defamation case against Amber Heard, his ex-wife. After the much-publicized trial in 2022, the court ordered Amber to pay Johnny over $8 million in damages. However, this amount was reduced to a mere $1 million, as agreed by both parties, to end the legal case.
During the trial, it was revealed that Disney cut ties with Johnny after he was labeled a wife-beater.
During one of the sessions, Amber’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, asked Johnny, “If Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ film, correct?”
Johnny answered, “That is true.”
Back then, what Disney referred to as new energy and new life being breathed into the series comprised a Pirates installment led by a female pirate, supposedly to be portrayed by Margot Robbie.
But Oscar-nominee Margot shared in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022 that the much-talked-about female-led movie with her as a lead would not happen.
She explained, “We had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”
Johnny returning to Hollywood after being dropped, judged, and criticized is one of the most powerful comebacks.
At last month’s Cannes Film Festival, Johnny received a seven-minute standing ovation for his first film after the entire saga, Jeanne du Barry.
The actor, known for portraying diverse roles like Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka, played the character of King Louis XV in this period drama movie.
During the commendation, Johnny was seen tearing up as he took it all in with Maiwenn, the director and co-star in the film.
This recognition after Hollywood blackballed him for several years was sweet for Johnny. His appearance at the 76th Film Festival was also the actor’s debut on the red carpet after winning in court.
