Katie Holmes Discusses The Depiction Of Sexual Assault in New Film “Rare Objects”
Katie Holmes opened up about sexual assault in a recent interview with Glamour magazine. The 44-year-old actress’ interview was part of a promotion of her latest film, Rare Objects, which she directed and co-wrote.
Speaking to Glamour, Katie discussed the importance of depicting sexual assault in the film, stating that the scene was a difficult one to shoot but that it was crucial to show the aftermath of the attack.
Katie explained that she felt it was important to address sexual assault in the film because it is a topic that is often discussed among women but rarely depicted in film. She praised the actress who played the victim in the scene, Julia Mayorga, for her powerful performance.
“Julia was so incredible in that scene, and that was really a difficult one to shoot because I just needed her face,” she stated.
According to the Dawson’s Creek star, what the assault did to Benita (Julia’s character) in the aftermath was very important to her. “To me, unfortunately, [sexual assault] is an understood secret amongst women, so we don’t have to share too much to know what we’re talking about. Julia was so incredible in that scene, and that was really a difficult one to shoot because I just needed her face. I kept the elling both of the actors, ‘It’s your faces.’ And so they had to really go there. Everybody was pretty shaken up after,” she went on.
Rare Objects is based on Kathleen Tessaro’s novel of the same name, which was released in 2016. The film is set in modern-day New York City and centers around a young woman who works in an antique store and tries to rebuild her life after a series of setbacks. The film’s cast includes Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke, and Gina Jun.
Katie has had a successful career in film and television, including her breakout role in Dawson’s Creek. She has also appeared in films such as Batman Begins, Thank You for Smoking, and The Kennedys. In addition to her work as an actress, the multifaceted star has pursued directing and producing with Rare Objects marking her second feature film as a director.
The film will be released in theaters and on demand on Friday. Katie has been promoting the film through interviews and public appearances, including a recent appearance on Access Hollywood. During the interview, she discussed her love of the novel’s central friendship and the importance of depicting positive relationships between women on screen.
“What I love about this film and what attracted me to the book is the friendship between these two characters,” she said.
“We see both of them struggle with different things in their life, but they also find the joy of life for each other, and we see them supporting each other. I think that’s really nice to see onscreen and to see women supporting one another,” she continued.
