Kevin Smith Announces Sequel To “Dogma”– and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Are Returning!
Get ready, Dogma fans — it’s happening! Kevin Smith, the creator of the 1999 religious satirical comedy, has confirmed that a sequel is officially in the works. During the Vulture Festival on November 17, Kevin excitedly shared the news, leaving fans buzzing with excitement. And the best part? Original stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are expected to reprise their roles in the sequel.
Kevin, 54, joked about how he’s been able to keep Ben, 52, and Matt, 54, coming back to his films for years. According to Kevin, it’s all thanks to his behind-the-scenes work on their iconic 1997 film Good Will Hunting. “I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 f—ing years, which is why they keep showing up in all my movies,” he stated, referring to how they famously forgot to thank him during their Oscar and Golden Globe speeches.
But the Dogma sequel isn’t just a small cameo for the two stars — it’s going to be bigger than that. “Expect a cameo from them—more than a f—ing cameo,” Kevin teased, adding, “The only way we get a Dogma sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”
Ben and Matt’s return makes perfect sense, especially considering how much Kevin helped them early in their careers. In an earlier interview, Matt explained how Kevin helped save Good Will Hunting, which was struggling to get made at the time. “Kevin saved Good Will Hunting. We were dead in the water. And we would’ve lost it. It would’ve been made with other people in it, and we’d still be really angry I’m sure,” Matt stated.
“We would have been the writers, but we wouldn’t have been the actors. And the whole thing was we wanted to be actors. And he got it to [executive producer] Jon Gordon and got people to believe in it,” Ben explained.
For those who may not remember, Ben and Matt starred in Dogma as fallen angels, Loki and Bartleby. The two were on a mission to return to heaven via New Jersey — though their plans threatened to destroy humanity in the process. The duo’s chemistry in the original film was one of the highlights, and fans are eagerly awaiting their return.
Kevin’s not just revisiting Dogma, though. He also has a sequel to his 1995 cult classic Mallrats in the works. Kevin revealed that he finished writing the script during the early days of the COVID-19 quarantine, promising fans that the sequel, titled Twilight of the Mallrats, will be a mix of “silly, sentimental, and sweet” comedy. And, of course, Jay and Silent Bob will be back, along with a cast of familiar faces.
Kevin teased that while Twilight of the Mallrats is full of heart, the story moves quickly — like a “brakeless bullet train.” So, whether you’re a fan of Dogma or Mallrats, it looks like Kevin is bringing plenty of nostalgic fun for fans of his beloved films.
