Kit Harington, the actor who portrayed Jon Snow in the iconic series Game of Thrones, has dashed the hopes of fans eagerly awaiting news of a spinoff centered around his character. In a recent interview while promoting his new film Blood for Dust, the 37-year-old British actor confirmed that the much-anticipated project is no longer in development.
“I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development,” he revealed to Screen Rant. “I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen.”
Kit explained that despite thorough consideration from writers and producers, the team ultimately couldn’t find the right story to bring to life. “Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being,” he revealed.
While Kit hinted that a spinoff may be revisited in the future, he made it clear that it’s “firmly on the shelf” for now. This revelation comes after months of speculation following Kit’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in February 2023, where he coyly addressed rumors about the spinoff but kept details under wraps.
He told host Jimmy Fallon at the time that he could be convinced to star in another GOT-related series if that would get him more attention and recognition.
“I don’t know, man … I walk down the street and I get recognized a little less nowadays, and it kind of hurts my ego, you know. I’m pretty close to like putting on some furs,” he said jokingly.
“I got a tally in my head of how few photos I get asked for in a day. And when it gets below a certain number, I think I’ll do a spinoff,” he added.
The decision to shelve the spinoff comes amid a flurry of activity surrounding the Game of Thrones universe. Since the series finale aired in May 2019, HBO has been actively developing spinoff projects. The first, House of the Dragon, a prequel series, premiered in August 2022 to widespread acclaim. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to bring other projects, including adaptations of George R. R. Martin’s other works, to the screen.
