Leonardo DiCaprio Returns to the Big Screen in Killers of the Flower Moon Trailer
The much-anticipated trailer for Killers of the Flower Moon has been released, showcasing Leonardo DiCaprio’s return to the silver screen. Just a few weeks after a sneak peek at CinemaCon, the trailer offers a glimpse into the harrowing true story of the “reign of terror” that resulted in the deaths of two dozen Native Americans.
In the film, Leonardo portrays Ernest Burkhart, who arrives in Oklahoma, home to the indigenous Osage Nation tribe. He becomes romantically involved with Mollie Kyle, played by Lily Gladstone, and finds himself interrogated by Officer Tom White, portrayed by Jesse Plemons. Notably, the movie also features Robert De Niro as cattleman William Hale, Burkhart’s uncle.
Killers of the Flower Moon marks DiCaprio’s first appearance on the big screen since Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019. The actor also starred in the 2021 film Don’t Look Up, which premiered on Netflix.
The gripping trailer is narrated by DiCaprio’s character, Burkhart, as he adopts a convincing Midwestern accent. He provides background information, stating, “The Osage took their name from Missouri and Osage Rivers. Ni-U-Kon-Ska. Children of the Middle Waters.”
The initial part of the trailer focuses on the courtship and romance between Burkhart and Kyle, portraying their relationship before the plot takes a dark turn. Several intense scenes are showcased, including Burkhart comforting Kyle while a lifeless body, presumably a family member, is carried, a firm handshake from Hale, a stabbing incident, and a courtroom shot featuring Hale sitting next to his attorney W.S. Hamilton, portrayed by Brendan Fraser.
Of particular interest is the tense exchange between Burkhart and Officer White during an interrogation, adding to the film’s suspense.
The epic trailer concludes with an atmospheric shot of a room filled with men and women, including Hamilton. Burkhart poses the question once more, “Can you find the wolves in this picture?”
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is set to premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, with a limited release in select cinemas on October 6. The film will later have a wider release in the US on October 20, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. A streaming release on Apple TV+ is also anticipated, although the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
Based on the 2017 non-fiction book by David Grann, the film delves into a little-known chapter of American history involving the Osage Nation. In the 1920s, the tribe experienced a sudden influx of wealth when oil was discovered beneath their land, generating more than $30 million in annual revenue at its peak. However, outsiders could only attain a share of the wealth by marrying into the tribe, a crucial aspect that sets the stage for the narrative.
