Lizzo Lands First Lead Role In Upcoming Biopic

Lizzo is stepping into the spotlight in a brand-new way! The Grammy-winning artist has landed her first lead role in a feature film, taking on the part of gospel legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming biopic, Rosetta. Known as the “Godmother of Rock and Roll,” Rosetta revolutionized music in the 1930s by blending gospel lyrics with electric guitar, influencing generations of rock musicians.
Excited about the news, Lizzo, 36, took to Instagram to share a screenshot of Deadline’s report, adding her own enthusiastic caption: “Black people made rock n roll yeaaaah.”
She followed up with a post on her Instagram Story, writing, “It’s finally out y’all. I’m so excited and honored.”
The film, which will be written by Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant, Queen of the South) and Kwynn Perry (Tigerbelles, The Burned Photo), also boasts an impressive lineup of producers, including Kevin Beisler and Significant Productions’ Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker.
This marks Lizzo’s first major acting role since her 2019 appearance in Hustlers, where she played a stripper named Liz alongside Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. She has also made a guest appearance in The Mandalorian as The Duchess.
Beyond her music and acting career, Lizzo has been candid about her mental health struggles. During a recent concert at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, she opened up about her battle with depression in 2023. Speaking to the audience, she revealed how she felt “so heartbroken by the world” that she didn’t want to live anymore. However, she had a turning point at a concert when a stranger told her, “Lizzo, I love you,” leading to an emotional hug that helped her start healing.
The singer has also been dealing with legal challenges. In August 2023, former backup dancers filed lawsuits accusing her of harassment and fostering a toxic work environment. Lizzo has strongly denied the allegations, but the lawsuits remain ongoing.
Despite the ups and downs, Lizzo is charging forward with new music, preparing to release her next album, Love in Real Life.
