Luke Dick Reveals He Initially Wrote Cosmic Love Song “True Companion” For Miranda Lambert Collaboration

Luke Dick, acclaimed songwriter and musician, unveils his latest creation, True Companion, a cosmic love story inspired by his collaboration with country music icon Miranda Lambert. The song, penned alongside fellow songwriter Natalie Hemby, took shape during a late-night session in October 2020, resonating deeply with Luke’s artistic vision.

Reflecting on the creative process, the 44-year-old shares his admiration for Miranda, expressing confidence in her ability to bring depth to their collaborations. 

“I knew that Miranda would go there with me. Miranda is a fellow traveler like me in many ways. We’re a similar age, we’re from a similar region, and we have similar perspectives. And basically, I always love to get a Miranda cut and be a part of her record,” he stated.

While initially intended for Miranda’s Palomino album, True Companion found its home on Luke’s upcoming album, Lockeland, scheduled for release on March 15. Despite the deviation from its original destination, his artistic instinct guided him to include the song in his own collection.

“I had put a vocal on it and asked Miranda if she minded if I put it on my record. She immediately thought I should. And so, I changed the arrangement a bit and just felt it out and moved things around,” he shared.

Describing the evolution of True Companion, Luke reveals his personal connection to the song, likening its themes to his relationship with his new wife, Alison Love.

“A big part of our relationship has been adventuring. I’ve never traveled so well with somebody in terms of being able to flow and feel a new place together and experience wonder in the same way. We’ve had this connection from day one, this feeling of sort of traveling the universe together in the world,” he said of his romance with Alison.

As a multi-instrumentalist, Luke showcases his versatility by performing nearly all instruments on Lockeland, infusing his personal touch into every aspect of the album. With True Companion, he delves into the complexities of love, drawing from his own experiences and beliefs.

For the songwriter, love is a multifaceted concept, evolving over time and shaped by personal growth and connection. Through his music, he seeks to convey the depth and resilience of love, inviting listeners to explore its nuances.

Speaking of how he drew from the concept of love to create True Companion, he said, “I wanted to lean into that and to be able to express it, and then also put it out there into the world and have it be seen and heard and experienced by other people.”
