Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment Gets On Board for Monopoly Movie
Lionsgate Films revealed on Wednesday that they’ve brought Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap productions on board for the Monopoly movie. While the news of the Monopoly film raised quite a stir, the collaboration didn’t raise any eyebrows.
That’s because LuckyChap’s recent project Barbie became one of the most popular films of 2023, grossing $1.4 billion at the box office. It’s only natural for the company to want to capitalize on the success of a toy-based motion picture.
Many aren’t sure what the movie will be about. While there have been speculations, the project is still in its initial stages so no official comment has been made.
Film chief and chair of Lionsgate, Adam Fogelson, expressed excitement for the project but didn’t dive into its details. There’s no news from the other 2 production companies either.
LuckyChap seems to be the ideal company for the project. Apart from Barbie, the female-focused company has produced a roster of successful projects like Saltburn, I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Dollface, Maid, Promising Young Woman, etc. It has also produced the Sundance comedy My Old Ass, which was picked up by Amazon for release. Hence, it could be the perfect production company for a live-action film based on the real estate tycoon game.
Additionally, Lionsgate will also be bringing Hasbro Entertainment on board as a producer.
While moviegoers aren’t excited about the film, there has been much curiosity about the narrative and the actor who will play the role of Milburn Pennybags—the game’s iconic mascot. There has also been speculation about whether Robbie will make an appearance in the film or limit her involvement as a producer.
Margot Robbie was recently spotted in LA sporting a new look while filming A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. It’s her first project after Barbie and will see her shedding the iconic doll’s beret look for a strawberry blonde one. The project stars Colin Farrell and tells the story of the extraordinary connection between 2 strangers.
Robbie, her production partners, and Director Olivia Wilde are also working on the R-rated Christmas comedy Naughty. As for LuckyChap, it too has a host of projects lined up. It recently announced plans to bring the long-running video game The Sims to screen, creating a live-action adaptation that has been in development since 2007.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate has announced its share of exciting projects. A recent production entails a new take on the classic The Blair Witch Project which is being created in collaboration with horror hitmaker Blumhouse.
With the producers’ busy schedules, it may be a long wait before the Monopoly movie graces our theaters.
Interestingly, the owner of the Monopoly brand, toymaker Hasbro, has been working on getting the movie off the ground for a decade. Although it was successful at negotiating movies for its other product lines (Transformers), Monopoly was a different deal. But with Barbie’s success, who knows? We may be seeing more toy-based films on our screens in the near future.
