Mary Elizabeth Winstead Reflects On How She Reunited With Ewan McGregor On-Screen In “A Gentleman In Moscow”

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and her husband, Ewan McGregor, are set to share the screen once again in the upcoming series A Gentleman in Moscow. In a conversation with Variety, Mary spoke about the collaboration, as she revealed that she has been eager for another chance to work alongside Ewan sSnce the conclusion of Fargo with its fifth and final season.

According to Mary, Ewan, who became an executive producer on the series adaptation of Amor Towles’ novel, immediately thought of her for the role of Anna Urbanova. Anna is an actress caught in an on-again-off-again relationship with Ewan’s character, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov. 

“Ewan was reading the novel and he started slyly mentioning to me, in very subtle ways, that there was a great female character in the book. He was definitely hinting to me that it could be a good opportunity for us to work together,” Mary shared.

Initially, she said was hesitant, as she wanted to ensure her interest in the role was genuine and not solely driven by the opportunity to work with her husband. However, as the character of Anna Urbanova was further developed, she became excited about the role. 

“I’ve been dying to do something properly together since we did Fargo. I really didn’t expect it to be as great of a role as it ended up being. I just felt so lucky,” she admitted.

Mary and Ewan first met on the set of the FX series Fargo in late 2016, where they played each other’s love interests. At the time, both were married to other people – Ewan to Eve Mavrakis and Mary to Riley Stearns. Following the end of their respective marriages, the co-stars began dating.

After nearly four years together, the couple welcomed their first child in June 2021 and tied the knot the following April. Their relationship both on and off the screen has been a testament to their strong connection.

In December 2023, Mary told PEOPLE why she and Ewan love working together. “Sometimes, especially when you have kids, just to have the opportunity to get to be together and not be in separate places — the gratitude that comes with that elevates the experience even more, because you’re just so grateful to get to be in the same place at the same time. And beyond that, we just love acting together. I can’t imagine a more fun partner to get to do that with, so it’s great,” she shared.
