Michelle Buteau Hilariously Shares Why Her Husband Worries About Lenny Kravitz
Michelle Buteau knows how to turn life’s moments into comedy gold — and her husband, Gijs van der Most, might be the biggest source of inspiration. In her new Netflix special, Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind, the comedian hilariously recounts how her husband reacted when none other than Lenny Kravitz followed her on Instagram.
“My husband threw me a party because we found out Lenny Kravitz was following me on Instagram,” Michelle jokes in the special’s trailer. But the real fun started when the rock legend began liking her posts.
As she recalled, “But then Lenny Kravitz kept liking my posts, and my husband was like, ‘Do I gotta worry about Lenny Kravitz?’”
For those wondering, yes, Lenny still follows Michelle on Instagram—a fact eagle-eyed fans can confirm.
Michelle doesn’t stop at Instagram humor; she also dives into the chaos of motherhood. She and Gijs are parents to 5-year-old twins, Hazel and Otis, who were born via surrogate in 2019. “What I didn’t realize with twins, everybody wants to talk to you,” she tells the audience, adding, “People walk up to me with, like, agency and purpose, and are like, ‘Are they twins?'”
Parenting hasn’t always been an easy road for Michelle. She’s been open about her journey to motherhood and how her husband first suggested surrogacy during a difficult time. In a 2020 interview with PEOPLE, the comedian shared, “My husband said, ‘You know, I want you back. You are so unhappy and just physically wrecked.’ I didn’t know anyone that did it. I didn’t have anyone to talk to about it. I just researched.”
After much research, she found what she calls “walking angels on Earth” who helped her achieve her dreams of becoming a mother.
Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind is also a milestone for comedy, as Michelle is the first female comedian to record a special at Radio City Music Hall. She didn’t shy away from acknowledging the moment during her set. “I might be the first woman to do a special on this stage,” she declared, “but I better not be the f—ing last!”
Michelle’s humor extends to her career aspirations, too. She dreams of making a difference through comedy. “I wanna make millions and millions of dollars for making people feel safe, seen, secure, heard, and entertained,” she proclaims in the special. “That is my goal. My goal used to be to find my belly button when I sit down, but that s— ain’t realistic.”
The special, directed by Page Hurwitz and Sandra Restrepo and produced by Push It Productions, is Michelle’s second Netflix project. Her first, Welcome to Buteaupia, earned a Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Special in 2020.
