Mindy Kaling Opens Up About Single Motherhood And Career Responsibilities
Mindy Kaling, the creator of Never Have I Ever, is sharing her heartfelt journey as a single mom. In a recent interview with WSJ. Magazine, the 44-year-old opened up about the profound impact motherhood has had on her life.
With two adorable children, daughter Katherine “Kit” and son Spencer, Mindy reflects on the joys and challenges of raising them solo.
“It’s really rewarding, being a mom and spending time with these two people who look like me,” she stated, emphasizing the bond she shares with her little ones.
“I love them, and they’re so funny. In terms of my career, I’m a single mom, I’m the breadwinner in the house,” she added.
As the sole provider for her family, Mindy acknowledges the pressure of being the breadwinner. “The buck stops with me,” she stated, highlighting the responsibility she feels to provide for her children.
In her words, “Having kids is everything — wanting to be a good role model and wanting to produce content that doesn’t embarrass them and makes them proud is another layer to my life and a complication that I welcome.”
Reflecting on her journey to motherhood, Mindy revealed her childhood fascination with romantic love and her eventual decision to prioritize family.
Noting her shift in focus from romantic pursuits to maternal fulfillment, she stated, “My kids are such a huge part of my life and I knew growing up, I was always obsessed with romantic love and obsessing about boys. Even when I was like, 13 or 14 years old. I was never someone that boys wanted to date or do anything with, so it sort of made the passion and interest more intense, if that makes sense.”
“I was very boy-crazy with zero success, so I had this pent-up interest. I always, you know, a lot of projects I write and work on are about women who are obsessed with marriage. Both because I relate to it and because I think it’s really funny,” she added, going further to say, “And there is also a desperation to it that is, you know, makes you incredibly unhappy. And in my 20s, wanting to find someone, anyone, to settle down with.”
Despite the challenges, Mindy finds joy in creating lasting memories with her children, as seen in her Instagram posts documenting their adventures. From experiencing Broadway shows to exploring the wonders of New York City, she cherishes the moments shared with her family.
