Paul McCartney And Deon Cole Light Up The Hollywood Improv
Paul McCartney made a surprise appearance at the Hollywood Improv during Deon Cole’s comedy show on September 17, even joining in with his own joke. Deon, known for his role in Black-ish, introduced Paul to the audience after joking about the two of them smoking marijuana before the set.
“I got high with my friend tonight, and we had a good time. Come here. Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for my friend Paul McCartney,” Deon said as he welcomed the legendary musician on stage.
The actor added humorously, “I had to smoke, and that’s why this is happening and y’all motherf—ers did not give no love to me at all tonight.”
The comedian, feeling the audience wasn’t responding to his performance, playfully called out a heckler who claimed they showed appreciation for the rest of the performance.
Paul, 82, then took the microphone and praised Deon’s work, saying, “I’ve just been enjoying seeing you working through this material, and you’re right, some of it bombed,” which drew laughter from the audience.
Deon, reflecting on the performance, remarked that he’d prefer to have a bad set in a small club rather than a larger venue. He then asked Paul if he had ever experienced a performance that bombed. The Beatles icon recalled how, in the early days of the band, audiences would throw pennies at them during gigs.
In the singer’s words: “In the beginning, when we started out, guys used to throw pennies at us.”
The following day, Deon shared a clip of the moment on social media, writing, “My friend Paul came to watch me work on new material last night. We had a blast.”
In other news, Deon’s latest comedy special, Deon Cole: Ok, Mister, debuted on Netflix on September 17 and quickly became a hit. It reached the top 3 on the platform’s list of popular TV shows streaming in the U.S.
Deon expressed his gratitude in a post on Instagram, thanking his fans for their support. “Thank you to EVERYONE who has watched, quoted, shared and enjoyed my new special. The love has been enormous and I just want to thank you all!!!,” he wrote.
Asking fans to keep up the energy, he concluded, “Keep watching & spreading the word please??? Thank you!!!”
