Priyanka Chopra Admits To Being Overwhelmed by Motherhood
Priyanka Chopra, a seasoned and successful actress, film producer, and beauty pageant winner, recently shared that she felt overwhelmed at being a first-time mom to 1-year-old daughter Malti.
Married to Nick Jonas, Priyanka became a mom in January 2022. The baby had to stay in the NICU for more than 100 days because she was born prematurely. They were only able to bring their daughter home in May.
While talking to People, the 41-year-old Indian actress revealed that she was scared to make mistakes as a parent and that she felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities of motherhood. She explained, “I think when you put them to bed, it’s extremely overwhelming because every single day, you worry about what you can do wrong and what mistake you might make.”
She added, “But you have to check yourself, and I check myself with my family.”
The actress also admitted that motherhood has been tense but rewarding. Priyanka, explained, “I look at [my daughter’s] smile, and I’m like, ‘Okay, okay. I’m doing good so far. It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done but extremely scary.”
Now that the former Quantico star has been a mother for over a year, she has noticed some changes in herself. For starters, she admitted that she has become more vulnerable and sensitive which has made her a little nervous because it was unexpected.
Recall that Priyanka and Nick welcomed Malti via a surrogate. Priyanka reflected on their daughter’s time in the NICU, “I don’t think it was our test. I think it was her test. And I realized very, very early that I did not have the luxury to be scared or to be weak because she was scared and weak.”
As her motherly instincts kicked in, she realized she and Nick must always ensure that Malti feels safe, especially with her parents. Finally bringing Malti home from the NICU in May 2022 was the best Mother’s Day gift for Priyanka.
She shared her gratitude on Instagram, writing, “On this Mother’s Day we can’t help but reflect on these last few months and the rollercoaster we’ve been on, which we now know, so many people have also experienced. After 100-plus days in the NICU, our little girl is finally home. Every family’s journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is.”
Meanwhile, Nick praised his wife online, “You are already an incredible mother. Happy Mother’s Day. I love you.”
After getting Malti home, Priyanka learned that she had entirely different challenges at home. The Love Again actress shared, “[In the NICU], you know your child is alive because you can see their heartbeat [on the monitor]. I couldn’t sleep for days because now suddenly she was home without a monitor.”
Priyanka said she would put her ear against her daughter’s chest and wake up several times to check if Malti was OK. Her paranoia and need for assurance persisted for weeks.
