Rihanna Claps Back At Critics Over Her Playful Post About U.S. Election
Rihanna has once again shown that she’s not here for any disrespect — especially when it comes to political issues that affect women. The Barbados-born superstar recently shared a humorous post on Instagram, where she joked about sneaking into U.S. voting polls with her son’s passport. “POV: me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport #VoteCauseICant,” she wrote, sharing a playful selfie video from inside her car. But not everyone found the joke funny, and as usual, Rihanna was quick to respond.
Rihanna, who shares two sons, RZA and Riot Rose, with rapper A$AP Rocky, added a caption stressing the importance of protecting women’s rights in the upcoming presidential election. “When protecting [women’s rights] and firing [oppressors] can happen all in one vote,” she posted, using her signature edgy style to add, “#votecauseicant #TanSuitSeason.” Her comment section lit up, with fans and critics chiming in. While some were supportive, others questioned her stance on U.S. politics and why she was involved if she isn’t a citizen.
One commenter asked, “Why should you be able to [vote] if you are not a legal citizen?” Rihanna didn’t miss a beat and shot back, “Ew! Hate an illiterate ass ho.”
When another critic suggested that celebrities should “stick to music” and stay out of politics, she responded, “Where were you [on] Jan 6 sis? Stick to your discounted crotch. We out here fighting for its rights.”
Some commenters, however, tried offering advice on how she could gain citizenship. But Rihanna’s response was firm: “I love my Bajan passport! I came here to work and pay taxes. You’re welcome.” When another person suggested she get dual citizenship to set an example, Rihanna replied, “stfu and VOTE then! nobody looking up to my status nutty.”
The Diamonds singer has spoken up about American politics before. Right after President Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration, she shared a photo of herself taking out trash bags while wearing a shirt that read “end racism by any means necessary.” The post, captioned “I’m just here to help,” seemed like a subtle jab at former President Donald Trump, with the added hashtag #wediditJoe nodding to Vice President Kamala Harris’s now-iconic election night video.
