Golf superstar Rory McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, have decided to stay together, ending rumors of their split. Rory, who had filed for divorce on May 13, withdrew the petition on June 11 through his attorney in Palm Beach County Court.
“There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game,” Rory said while speaking with The Guardian on Tuesday.
He continued, “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
The couple, who share a daughter named Poppy born in 2020, initially sparked rumors of trouble when they were both seen without their wedding rings last month. Rory was spotted ringless during the PGA Championship on May 16 at Valhalla Golf Club, while Erica was seen without her engagement ring the same day in Jupiter, Fla.
Rory and Erica’s love story began in 2012 at the Ryder Cup, where Rory was working as a transport official for the PGA of America. After a time zone mixup, Rory helped Erica get a police escort to the course in Medinah, Ill., ensuring he made his tee time. He was, however, engaged to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki at the time and he and Erica did not become romantically involved until late 2014.
The couple married on April 22, 2017, in a lavish ceremony at Ashford Castle in County Mayo, Ireland, attended by several A-list celebrities.
Throughout their relationship, Erica has been a supportive presence at Rory’s tournaments, from caddying for him at the 2023 Masters Par 3 contest to cheering him on at the Ryder Cup in Italy.
On the professional front, Rory is gearing up for the 2024 U.S. Open in Pinehurst, N.C. On Tuesday, he spoke about his career and his determination to win a fifth major title. “I’m really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved, whether it be season-long titles or individual tournaments or majors,” he said.
“Obviously getting my hands on a fifth major has taken quite a while, but I’m more confident than ever that I’m right there, that I’m as close as I’ve ever been,” he added.
