Ryan Gosling Teams Up With Mark Ronson For Empowering Ken Ballad In Upcoming Barbie Movie
The highly anticipated Barbie movie is set to hit theaters on July 21, and it’s already generating buzz among fans and celebrities alike. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Grammy-winning music producer Mark Ronson shared his exciting collaboration with actor Ryan Gosling for a powerful song that explores the depths of Ken’s character.
Mark, known for his hit song Uptown Funk, revealed that he felt an instant connection with the portrayal of Ken in the movie, particularly the version played by Ryan. “You really fall in love with this hapless, but immediately sympathetic figure,” he explained. This immediate “Ken-ection” became the catalyst for the creation of the emotional power ballad, appropriately titled I’m Just Ken.
The inspiration for the song stemmed from Mark’s observation of the overwhelming presence of Barbie dolls on toy store shelves, while Kens seemed to be in short supply. “Nobody gives a s— about buying a Ken doll,” he humorously commented. This observation led him to pen the poignant line, “Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blond fragility?”
Mark believed that only Gosling could deliver the line with the necessary emotional weight, and fortunately, the actor agreed.
When Ryan first heard the demo of I’m Just Ken, he was captivated by its message and instantly became a fan of the song. Not only did he agree to lend his vocals to the track, but he also expressed his desire to perform it on-screen. Mark was initially concerned about how the Barbie movie director, Greta Gerwig, would respond to the song. He didn’t want her to think he was merely trying to inject humor into the film. However, Greta embraced the ballad and even rewrote a pivotal scene to ensure that Ryan could showcase his vocal talents in the movie.
Reflecting on Ryan’s vocal abilities, Mark expressed his admiration for the actor’s talent. He commended Ryan for understanding the delicate balance the song required, as it couldn’t be perceived as a mere parody. “But obviously, the song is also kind of ridiculous at times,” the singer admitted. He was in awe of Rya’s vocal prowess, describing him as a “vocal powerhouse” when he hit the big notes during the recording.
In a recent sneak peek of Barbie, audiences were treated to Gosling’s Ken-ergetic performance of “I’m Just Ken.” The preview showcased both his musical abilities and comedic chops as he crooned alongside Margot Robbie’s Barbie. With lyrics like “I’m just Ken. Where I see love, she sees a friend. What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?” the song encapsulates Ken’s heartfelt plea for recognition and love.
With the release date closely ahead, fans can eagerly anticipate the release of Barbie, which promises a delightful blend of music, comedy, and a fresh take on the iconic dolls.
