Ryan Reynolds Shares Joy And Challenges Of Current Phase Of Family Life
Ryan Reynolds, known for his wit and charm, recently shared a candid glimpse into his family life and parenting journey with Blake Lively. The Hollywood couple, who tied the knot in 2012, are parents to four young children: daughters James (9), Inez (7), and Betty (4), along with their 1-year-old son Olin.
In a chat on Amanda Hirsch’s popular podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat, part of the Dear Media network, Reynolds opened up about the joys and challenges of parenting.
“Embrace the chaos,” Ryan advised in the episode set to be released on July 30, sharing his perspective on family life.
He and Blake, known for her role in Gossip Girl and It Ends With Us, are well aware that with four kids, “nothing’s going to be tidy ever again.”
However, Ryan added with a smile, “It will be, though, when they all leave the house.”
According to the Deadpool actor, Blake often reminds him of the preciousness of this time, saying, “They’re all under our roof right now. The whole family’s under our roof right now. We have them all.” This, Ryan emphasized, is a fleeting moment, “not an infinite resource.”
Ryan acknowledged that parenting isn’t always a state of blissful gratitude. “It does get to you,” he admitted. “And it’s okay to be like, ‘F—, I am dying.’ Because that’s gonna happen every other day.”
Among the many challenges, Ryan mentioned that some of their kids “can’t even go to sleep unless they’re in our bed.”
While he would love to spread out and fall asleep normally again, he is embracing the chaos, as he said, “Just think about what you would give in 40 years or 30 years to come back and enjoy this one moment.”
Ryan also touched on his friendship with Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman and the fun they had involving their family in the movie. Blake made a cameo as Lady Deadpool, Inez appeared as Kidpool, Olin as Babypool, and James as a Screaming Mutant.
“It was kind of one of those things where you’re like, ‘Well, why not?’” Ryan said. Since the family was all on set together, they thought, “Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s go nuts.”
In an April interview with PEOPLE, Ryan shared a piece of parenting advice from Deadpool & Wolverine director and co-writer Shawn Levy that resonated with him. “People tend to only talk about their wins. But I think it’s really important for your kids to know that you lose,” he said.
Ryan believes it’s crucial for his children to see that not everything goes perfectly. In his words: “You don’t get what you want all the time. Something you worked on really hard didn’t work. You feel like you said something embarrassing today, you did something that didn’t sit right with you. It’s just so important that they see that and they don’t just hear, ‘Oh Dad nailed it.’”
