Ryan Seacrest Makes Big Debut On “Wheel Of Fortune”: A New Era Begins
The wait is finally over! Ryan Seacrest, one of television’s most recognizable faces, has officially taken the reins of Wheel of Fortune. On September 9, the 49-year-old TV star made his debut as the new host, stepping into the shoes of the beloved Pat Sajak, who retired after 40 years of hosting the iconic game show.
With Vanna White by his side, Ryan kicked off his first episode with gratitude and excitement. “Welcome to Wheel of Fortune. I am your host, Ryan Seacrest,” he began, beaming as he addressed the audience.
“I still can’t believe my luck being here with you tonight to continue this legacy of this incredible show with all of you and of course, my good friend, Vanna White,” he added.
Ryan couldn’t hide his excitement for landing what he calls his “dream job.” “I’ve been a fan of this show since I was a kid, watching in Atlanta with my family, and I know how special it is that Wheel has been in your living rooms for the past 40 years, and I’m just so grateful to be invited in,” he shared with the live audience, adding, “I also know I’ve got some very big shoes to fill, so let’s play Wheel of Fortune!”
The night was made even more memorable when contestant Terry stole the show, walking away with an impressive $25,849 in cash and prizes. Before cutting to a commercial break, Ryan thanked Terry for being part of his first episode, calling him “a pleasure to hang out with” in the historic taping.
Ryan’s journey to the Wheel wasn’t just about showing up and smiling. He put in the work, preparing extensively for the role. In an interview earlier this month with PEOPLE, he explained how seriously he took the job. “Since I got the job, I’ve studied the rule book, I’ve watched Pat’s episodes, and I’ve rehearsed in conference rooms all over the country, depending on where I am doing work. We travel with a little wheel that we homemade to play, and I feel ready,”
Of course, the show wouldn’t be the same without the iconic Vanna, who has been the face of Wheel of Fortune alongside Sajak for decades. Ryan was clear on how important their partnership is, saying, “I can’t imagine Wheel of Fortune without Vanna White. It doesn’t seem right, especially if there’s going to be a new host.” Luckily, the duo seems to be hitting it off, with Ryan describing their time together as “magical.”
Pat Sajak, who ended his incredible run in June, handed over the reins with class and grace. During his final episode, Pat took a moment to thank the fans who welcomed him into their homes night after night for 40 years. “…Every time we taped a show, I met three new people from all parts of this wonderful country and the world who were kind and considerate, who rooted for each other, who took great pride in talking about their family, their hometown, their friends, their schools, their jobs, even their pets,” he said in his farewell speech.
