Selena Gomez Admits Thinking About Suicide In One Of Her Rawest Interviews
Even celebrities who people think have everything can also experience their rock bottoms. Selena Gomez, who grew up in front of the cameras and was always in the spotlight, also had her share of lows.
The Disney Channel alum revealed that she even considered committing suicide after several years of fighting psychosis and eventually being diagnosed with another blow to her well-being—bipolar disorder.
The 30-year-old actress was never secretive about her mental health struggles, and she is nothing but honest in her newest interview with Rolling Stone. This comes in preparation for the upcoming release of her Apple TV+ documentary entitled My Mind and Me.
At one point in her mental struggle, the singer thought the world would be better off without her. But she was clear that she never attempted to do it, despite contemplating taking her own life.
Selena also shared that she has gone to four treatment facilities to help her with her mental health struggle. Her mental battle started during her early twenties, and from then on, the young actress has been through a rollercoaster of extreme highs and lows. And these episodes don’t just last a day but for weeks and months at a time.
Unfortunately, Selena was unable to identify the triggers of these emotions. Add to these high-strung feelings, the Wizards of Waverly Place star also lacked sleep, going for days without shuteye. Selena also shared there were days she experienced the urge to buy everyone she knew a car—one of the indicators of mania, which the actress is well aware of.
The successful songwriter also shared that when her mental health is poor, she spends her days in bed, which goes on for weeks. She recognizes her pattern of being depressed and goes into isolation accordingly. She admitted it became so bad that she wouldn’t even move from her bed, and going downstairs was a physical and mental struggle.
She further shared that her friends who were concerned about her during periods of depression would bring her meals, but Selena would be in a state where she didn’t want to talk to anybody, and they didn’t understand what was happening.
Selena has a theory that several factors could have contributed to her mental state, including her career and the pressure that comes with it, her general health, and her not reaching life goals that she set when she was younger.
One of the examples that she mentioned was about being married at the age of 25, and at this point right now, she’s far from that goal. And although she knew that these were just small things, they were big enough for her and led her to think that her world and life were over.
Apart from her mental challenges, Selena also admitted that she also had issues communicating with her friends from outside the industry while, at the same time, feeling like she also doesn’t quite belong with her celebrity friends. Fitting into a social group was challenging because the young artist didn’t know who she was.
Selena is now in a better place with the right medical team supporting her. Still, the damage caused by too many medications she’s taking in the hopes of managing her mental health battle may also mean she won’t be able to carry a child in the future.
And this is another blow for her, who, like anybody else, would love to have a family of her own someday.
