Selena Gomez Speaks About Inspiring Journey Of Mental Health Resilience
In a candid and heartfelt interview with Fast Company, Selena Gomez opened up about her unwavering commitment to transparency when it comes to her mental health struggles.
At the age of 31, the talented actress, singer, and Rare Beauty makeup mogul has a profound realization: she has a platform, and she’s determined to use it to help her fans navigate their own mental health challenges. From the very beginning of her career, she’s been honest about her journey, including her bipolar diagnosis, which she first disclosed in 2020.
Selena, who rose to fame as a child star on Barney & Friends and later as a teen on Disney Channel, knows the responsibility that comes with being a role model. “I didn’t know who I was,” she shared. “Having that responsibility would make me walk on eggshells a lot,” she added.
According to her, she feared that revealing her true self could be damaging, but over time, she found liberation in her bipolar diagnosis.
Now, Selena is unapologetically herself and encourages others to do the same. “I’ve never promised anyone that I’ll never have a bad day again. I’ve always been honest with my fans,” she says, emphasizing the importance of taking breaks when needed for the sake of mental well-being.
One of Selena’s most impactful endeavors has been her documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which premiered last year. This intimate exploration of her triumphs and setbacks in the realm of mental health resonated deeply with her fans. She recalls touching moments when people told her, “I was so close to taking my life, but when I watched your documentary, I couldn’t imagine doing that anymore.”
Selena’s transparency has sparked a conversation that she hoped would lead to healing. Her journey also includes battling lupus and undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017, making her resilience all the more inspiring.
But her commitment doesn’t stop there. Three years ago, she launched Rare Beauty with a mission to support charities working to eliminate mental health stigmas through the Rare Impact Fund. The fund, initiated in 2020, aims to raise $100 million for youth mental health. Rare Beauty contributes 1% of its sales directly to the fund, which has already supported 23 organizations worldwide, benefiting over 740,000 young people, 10,000 teachers and administrators, and 367 educational systems.
As an extension of her dedication to this cause, the Heart Wants What It Wants singer is set to host the first annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit in Los Angeles on October 4th, bringing people together to create a brighter future for those struggling with mental health issues.
