Shrek’s Donkey Deserves His Movie, And Eddie Murphy Would Absolutely Reprise The Role
Eddy Murphy is certain that he will perform his role as Donkey again without hesitation if the opportunity arises.
Of late, the actor has recreated iconic and memorable movie roles, including that of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cops. He most recently made a comeback in Coming 2 America as Prince Akeem.
During an interview with Etalk last week, the comedian mentioned that, should the opportunity arise, he would be open to reprising his role as Donkey. He also shared how much he loves his character, Donkey.
Eddie’s remarks follow the box office success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a film starring another character from the first Shrek franchise.
The film is up for Best Animated Feature Film at the upcoming Academy Awards after grossing over $300 million worldwide.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish had to compete with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water but, surprisingly, put up an excellent fight and produced impressive numbers.
Eddie is hoping that Donkey is given his own movie and feature, given that another Shrek character like Puss already has his own story outside of Shrek.
Fully supporting his character, Eddie further described, “They should have done a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”
The 61-year-old American actor acknowledged that DreamWorks would decide on a possible Donkey spinoff. And to self-promote and call the studio’s attention, Eddie stated, “That’s DreamWorks Animation. They have to want to do it. DreamWorks, if you all want to do it, call me. I’m ready; I’m sitting and ready to do Donkey.”
Eddie was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! a few days ago, promoting his new movie, You People. This is a culture clash comedy where Eddie plays Akbar. He is joined by Jonah Hill in the movie as Ezra, who dates Akbar’s daughter.
Eddie placed Jonah in a comical spot while promoting their new movie, mocking the 39-year-old actor. Jonah co-wrote the film with creator and director Kenya Barris. It is set for release on streaming giant Netflix this Friday.
Eddie and Paige Butcher, his fiancée, were seen in matching outfits in Los Angeles at the movie’s premiere last Tuesday. The couple got engaged in September 2018 and are parents to Izzy, 6, and Max, 4.
Eddie kicked off 2023 with a bang. He received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, a lifetime achievement honor, at the Golden Globes early in January. Eddie always injects some humor into his acceptance speech. He ended it with a mic-drop joke that alluded to Will Smith and Chris Rock’s infamous Oscars slap.
The actor said, “I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I could stand up here and keep saying thank you until they play the piano. But I’m going to wrap it up and say something to all the up-and-coming dreamers and artists in the room tonight. I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, and peace of mind. Pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”
